He is anxious for Hartley's bets and Carol has determinedly thwarted all his moves in this direction. FOLKS who live in small towns are forced to dramatize things of small impor- tance because really exciting events seldom take place. The advent of a strange man is fine food for fer- tile imaginations. If his identity and purpose long re- | main a mystery, i he is young and handsome and ro- { mantic, there is no \' i | | to business, | limit to the pos- sibilities of drama- tizing him. Judy Phelps knew this. She had lived in & small town all her life, and she knew what was happening because of her interest in Lee Colburn. Or, at least, She caught her her breath. “Come with you? where?"” “Does that mat- Does any- thing matter? You love me don't you “Yes." she said after a moment But other things matter, too. He had lured Madison to bet on this one race, and he knew he had sug- gested a winner to him—it was part of his plan, of course, that a sucker should always win at the beginning. And now— Boswell was speaking in a low voice, charged with excitement and some. thing like fear. “But it will break further if we don’t do something. “Let it wait.” For & moment, Boswell could not speak. Let it wait! Was the chamber- maid right? Had his employer gone completely crazy? Duke was holding his breath now. This was the crucial moment. He knew that Madison had a fortune in United States Copper. He knew he was a good business man. Even a sucker would think of something besides & race at this moment. “Mr. Madison, please”—the secre~ tary was pleading now. “I'm too busy just now to listen,” said Madison. “There’'ve been breaks before and we've—that's right, Star- dust! p up the good work.” Bsowéll spoke again, but this time to no one in particular. “Where’s Tony Boy?” he asked. Duke, who had gone tense, relaxed. United Copper would have to wait. She wanted to ask him about him- self, but this would betray mistrust, and she didn’t mistrust him, really. It was toward the middle of Mr. Colburn’s third week in Holdman that Judy came home from work one after- noon (she taught grade VII in the Sleepy Hollow School) and was con- fronted by her mother “Judy, I want to talk to you about Mr. Colburn.” “You mean you've found out some- thing about him?” “I mean we haven't, and that's what makes me suspicious. Hilma Reid, who lives at Marm Robins’, says he’s terribly mysterious in what he does. He goes away daytimes and no one knows where. This morning a sirange man, driving one of those high-priced, fancy-make cars, called on him.” “Oh, mother, you're being silly! You're like all the others. You can't find out anything about Mr. Colburn, 50 you're using your imagination. It's ridiculous!” Judy didn't add that her own curiosity was strained to near the breaking point. After all, when you're interested in a man you do want to know something about him, * %k X LEE COLBURN calied her that night and they attended the local movie show. Judy was conscious that people were staring at them, whispering. After the show they went out to the Crossroads for ice cream, and later drove slowly back in the moonlight. They sat before the house in Lee's car. “T'll be leaving here soon,” Lee aaid. “Oh, Lee, do you have to?” He laughed almost bitterly. “That's it. I do have to” He moved closer to her. *Judy, eome with me.” His past was dark, | boarding house? | “You know that isn't the answer, Lee.” “Then why won't you come? reasons have you?” “I can't tell you, Lee.” "She looked at him quickly, almost expectantly. Alone. sitting in her darkened room near the window, Judy sobbed quietly. She was afraid, so terribly afraid, that he wouldn't understand. I HE next day her fears were con- firmed. Hilma Reid told her that Lee Colburn had packed up and left. His departure had been as mysterious as his arrival. No one knew any more about him than they had a month ago. Judy went about her duties with & dull ache in her heart. She supposed that time would heal the wound. Yet when a fortnight had passed, she felt that memory of Lee Colburn would never be blotted out. Secretly she resigned herself to a life of misery and unhappiness. Then one afternoon she was walking along the road that led from the Sleepy Hollow School to town and a car stopped beside her. “Judy!” She only stared, not daring to be- lieve, feeling faint. “Judy!” Lee Colburn said. He got out of the car and took her hands in his. “Listen to me, Judy. I'm terribly, terribly stupid. I only realized it yes- terday. His tone was apologetic. “I'm a playwright, Judy. I wanted to do a play on small towns. I came up here to live to get atmosphere. I thought small-town people were dumb. I wanted realism. So I baited them by pretending to be mysterious. Then I fell in love with you, but I couldn't understand your attitude. It occurred to me yesterday, when I reached the last act of my play. I knew what you meant that night— knew that you were giving me a taste of my own medicine. I expected you to give reasons for not running away with me, and at the same time offered to give no reason for my own attitude. I understand it now. Darling, will you forgive me?” Judy's eyes were filled with tears. She looked up at him, and her answer was there without being spoken. She had trusted to his understanding and her trust had not been in vain.
