Attendance was large and buying heavy at the trade shows devoted to housewares, draperies, curtains and furniture. “Interest in coats and suits spread from the sports types to expensive dressy models, with no resistance to the price advance, following the wage increase to workers. - “With the gain distributed over almost all divisions, estimated whole- sale volume ranged from 15 to 32 per cent larger than in the 1936 week. “Vacation closings disturbed the rise in some divisions this week, but higher operations in others main- tained the average of industrial production close to its best level of the year. “Producers of motors, mechanical conveyors, brewery equipment and metal products worked at an acceler- ated pace and there was a further expansion at most chemical plants.” Washington Produce BUTTER-—02 score. 1-pound prints. 36 Ya-pound prints., 37." tub. 35 #0 score, < : hogs. 11%al1% 250 pounds. 10%4all% sows. Brecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, July 16.—Buyers of housewares for départment stores and other retail outlets—here for the trade show—are looking for a bang-up re- tail season next Fall, for they have come to town with a 10-to-15 per cent inflation in their budgets as compared with last year. Among the 440 exhibitors at the show, which occupies four complete floors at the Hotel Pennsylvania, the word is that buying is good to excel- lent. Some exhibitors have written more business in certain territories 80 far in the show than all last year in the same territory. Because the show is strictly a trade affair, the public is not admitted, but for vis- iting buyers three floors of house- wares and electrical appliances and one floor entirely given over to china and glassware and pottery await their inspection. Looking at the exhibits, as this writer attempted to do, from the angle of the housewife who will later find them on display in the stores, it is apparent that the members of the New York Housewares Manufacturers’ Association (incorporated in this State but country-wide in membership) are solidly behind a program of fewer hours and easier work in the home, along with the lift that comes from just the right touches of “art moderne” in design as applied to everything from the smallest kitchen gadgets to major electrical appliances. Shiny Salad Bowls. On the aesthetic side, for instance, are the new, highly-polished salad bowls out to win the home market for domestic manufacturers. Made of mahogany, birch, maple and teak- wood, their glossy surfaces offer the least resistance to finger-tip pressure| on the clove of garlic which goes ‘round and ’round and then out the window, while the flavor lasts. And there is the new maple-trim alumi- num kitchenware—frying pans, sauce- pans, tea kettles, double boilers and such-like with handles and knobs of maple. The makers say “it is modern | color | and harmonizes with scheme.” On the side of lightening the labor of the missus, the robot coffee maker is as good an example as any. You put in the coffee and the electric drip-coffee maker does the rest—keeps the coffee from boiling, shui. off current when the brew is just right, and, by means of a thermostat, keeps the coffee piping hot as long as y-u want (the makers quoting experts to the effect that coffee so made and any kept holds its top quality for seven | hours or more). cially welcome in those households where breakfast hours are staggered. And there is a cocktall mixer of | glass, either decorative or plain, with | a spinner at the top which winds up with a red knob and is set going by the touch of a button to mix the drinks while the host or hostess—or both—remains gloveless and exertion- less. By any chance should too many drinks be imbibed, the morning-after headache has its own corrective in the form of a crown of ice, which is called “freeze-it,” eight or nine inches in length, to encircle the fevered brow. It is made of rubber, with separate ice pockets, s0 that it remains flexible after the water with which it is filled has been frozen in the cube com- partment of the electric refrigerator. Quick Hot Water. Or, if you want hot water quickly, | there is the “doughnut heater,” the size and shape of . doughnut. Plugged into any socket, it will boil, by im- mersion heating, nine quarts of wa- ter in two minutes. Many buyers wouldn’t believe it till they held the watch on it. The prize labor and trouble saver, as well as forgettery nullifier, is a dingus which is fastened by one arm to the clothes closet door and by the other to the door jamb, and which gives the moths a squirt of death- dealing spray every time you open the door. You can't forget and the moths can't escape. This year’s housewares show is the sixth annual exhibit under the man- agement of Flo English, executive secretary of the association and one of the outstanding “showmen” of the trade. This year’s exhibitors num- ber five times those of the starter, in 1932. The housewares display has come to be one of the country's larg- est trade shows, with the total busi- ness transacted running into the mil- | lions of dollars. It has achieved in- ternational recognition, foreign em- bassies calling in advance to get dates for buyers’ attendance. On the daily register are names from trade cen- ters the world around. For this year's show all space was sold out eight weeks in advance, and the manage- ment couldn’t place some eighty-odd manufacturers who applied too late. LIQUIDATING DIVIDEND.
