Nature’s Children Satin Bower Bird. BY LILLIAN COX ATHEY. N NORTHERN QUEENSLAND, Australia, one of the most polite birds has its home. It is not only courteous, but possesses im- agination. What else would make a bird search over the countryside for bright bits of shell, feathers, stone and glass, to bring home to his little spouse, dutifully sitting on their eggs? besides bringing the offering, the bower bird clears a place before the home 8o that his mate will have a charming front yard to play in when she must take exercise. How lovely she is too look at while attending to maternal duties. The bower birds are so called be- cause of the handsome bowers they construct for the nursery. They are cleverly made by fastening the upper “part of tall grass stems together, the center bbing fashioned for the cradle. Here the mother broods her eggs and looks out with interested eyes on her devoted husband who brings such dainty gifts to surprise her. Both of the birds are plump and dressed in very glossy brown. In the sunlight the plumage takes on a beautiful greenish tinge. ‘The bower birds belong to the order g fashioned for perching. Perhaps the most amazing thing about these birds is the way they play together for hours. Several in- teresting accounts by those who have watched them, have been recorded Winning Contract BY THE FOUR ACES. (David Burnstine Merwin D. Maier, Oswald Jacoby. Howard Schenken, world’s leading team-of-four, inventors of the sy: stem that has beaten every other system in existence.) Reconstruction. | T WAS long a tradition among the Four Aces that Oswald Jaco- by and Howard Schenken should never play as partners. Recently this tradition has been broken and they have been playing together with marked success. The following hand 1s & good illustration of their slam bidding: North, dealer. . Neither side vulnerable, East. Pass Pass Pass Pass South. 24 3 6& West. Pass Pass Pass While the slam is more or less a laydown, it is really quite a difficult one to bid. Of course, Mr. Jacoby’s opening bid of one spade and Mr. Bchenken’s initial response of two clubs are obvious, while Mr. Jacoby's second-round bid of two hearts is & “sort of compromise bid, inviting his partner to bid no-trump with a dia- mond stopper. With no diamond | stopper, however, Mr. Schenken de- | cided to bid three hearts, in spite of | the fact that he feared his partner held but four cards in that suit. Now, when Mr. Jacoby went to four clubs, Mr. Schenken reconstructed his hand, and it became obvious to him that Mr. Jacoby could not hold two diamonds, since, with four spades, four | hearts, three clubs and two diamonds, | Ae would probably not bid in such & manner as to get the hand past the three no-trump level. It also seemed | epparent to Mr. Schenken that his | partner would hold the king of hearts | and the queen of clubs and, at worse, the ace-queen of spades. According- 1y, Mr. Schenken jumped to the slam. West opened the four of diamonds, Sonnysayings While I is watchin’ Sara Lou’s window fer developers I are lettin’ on t' be weedin’ this flower-bed! Whelan's 1105 F St. N.W, (Intimately Yours) THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, FRIDAY, MAY 7, 1937. about the games played by bower birds. 8ix to ten birds play the game that is most popular among them. A clump of tall grass is selected and through the center a runway is made. The tall grasses are fastened together near the top, by weaving the tips together in such fashion that they . cannot come apart. Two of the groups are designated to perform this part of the game, while the others hurry off to find bits of shell, broken glass, bright feathers and glossy pebbles. The collectors race back and forth until almost a bushel of bright colored objects have been collected. In the meantime the bower has been com- pleted. It reminds you of a covered bridge. At a given time the game begins. There is always a prompter who says, “Go!” A bird picks up an object in his bill, runs through the bower and drops it on the opposite side. Rush- ing back to pick up another plece, it goes through the bower again. The other players watch silently and with great eagerness of expression. As soon as the player drops his token, before reaching the goal, it is the siemal for the others to clap him out. There is much shrill calling as if the others were delighted at his mis- fortune and the wings are flapped with gusto. Another takes his place and the game goes on for hours, Time may be taken off for a bit of refreshment, which the birds find on the trees, as they are very fond of insects. They are also glad to get grass seeds and the native fruits. Bower birds have no singing voice. They are ljvely talkers with sbrill but pleasant voices. As a family man, the bower bird proves to be & most excellent provider, & devoted father, a faithful husband, but extremcly bossy. His spouse, how- ever, does not seem to mind it. She is always contented and a home lover. (Copyright, 1937.) Ps;ral.olo—gy BY DR. JESSE W.
