BY EDWARD C. STONE. Bank deposits in the Capital piled up a gain of $31,215,535.67 between March, 1936, and the end of March, 1937, according to figures brought to light following the controller’s latest bank call isued yesterday and dawdl‘ as of March 31 Controller J. F. T. O'Connor’s call a year ago was dated earlier in the month, March 4, when deposits in the banks totaled $310,007,305.89 By March 31 of this year deposits had mounted to $341,222.841.56 In the banking district today bank- ers were commenting on the gain of $7,180,714.16 in the first three months of 1937, the size of this upswing being unexpected. Many bankers believed that aggregate deposits in the Wash- ington banks were running ahead of the December, 1936, total, but the ad- Vance to more than $341,000,000 was & higher figure than had been antici- pated A study of bank records discloses that bank deposits in the Capital have gained $94,768,926.56 since “March 5, 1934. During the year 1936 deposits here gained $40,348,600.77, a spec- tacular rise, but still not as striking as the gain of $27.628,382.49 hung up in the last six months of the year. Comparisons carried back to the | Wall Street boom show that deposits are far ahead of the highest figures | in 1929. The high point that year was on December 31, when the banks had | $255,783,346.85 in their vaults. As the | depression spread, deposits suffered | heavy recessions. The recent calls, after reflecting complete recovery, have shown a great deal of progress into wholly new ground | Riggs Continues Housing Loans. Robert V. Title I of | the act expired on April 1. Mr. Flem- | ing said these loans had proved such & great aid to home owners in modern- izing and repairing their homes that | he believed there might s be further | need for such loans in Washington and vicinity. The Washington Clearing House re- ports total clearings of $2 for the week ending April 7, compares with $27,783.821.26 in the | corresponding period a year ago, an increase of 7.1 per cent. In compari- son with a total of $24,436,408.49 for the previous week, clearings scored an increase of 21.8 per cent. Baltimore had a gain over last year of 25 per cent and Richmond 35 per cent. Washington is to be well repre- sented in Chicago on June 21-24 at< the forty-second annual convention of | the National Association of Credit Men. The convention is one of the most important business meetings of the year and is expected to have an attendance of nearly 5,000 credit men, Treasury Department representatives and others. J. H. Parker, Washington Association of Credit Men. has been named convention chairman for ‘Washington and vicinity. The Washington office of Gillet & Co. reports that the Mar-Tex Oil Co. has bought the interests of the Ben- nett Petroleum Corp. in the East Bryson Field in Texas for $1,000,000. ‘The new property is said to contain 17 producing wells. The Gillet firm distributed a good deal of the stock in Washington. It is listed on the Bal- timore Exchange State and municipal financing for the month of March aggregated $88,215,593, as compared with $119,- 995,256 in March, 1936, according to the Daily Bond Buyer. The total for the first quarter of 1937 is $357,388,- 986, as compared with $308,160,764 for the same period last year. . SALES OF “BABY BONDS” STILL FAR ABOVE 1936 Bs the Associated Press. NEW YORK, April 9.—United States Treasury sales of “baby bonds” continue to run far ahead of com- parable figures last year. Expansion in sales is attributed in financial circles partly to increased income of the public with the rise in pay rolls and wages, attraction of the bonds as a highly liquid investment and smaller yields obtainable on sav-~ ings in banks and top-grade bonds ‘Treasury receipts on United States savings bonds, as shown in its state- ment for April 3, compared as fol- lows: Fiscal year 1937 Like period 1936 fisc: $432,581,802 rear 185,391,001 7 3% Air-Way Electric_. 13% Alaska Jun (160c) Alleghany Corp Alleg pf ww $30_. 43% Alleg pf ww $40_ 3612 Alleg Steel (b40c) 25812 225 Allied Chem (6) 3315 2515 Allied Mills (b50c) 21% 16% Allied Stores (b20c) 80Y% Allied Strs pf (5)__. 6314 Allis-Chalm (b50c)_ 474 Amal Leather _ ___ 99'% Amerada Corp (2) . 27'% Am Bank Note (11). 58 Am Brake Sh (12) __ % Am Bra Sh rts Ap 16 105 Am Can (14) = 56 Am Car & Foundry_ 923 Am Car & Fy pf(b4) 72 Am Chain& Cabl.__ 115 Am Chain & C pf 5 99% Am Chicle (14) 13% Am Colortype 27% Am Crystal Sug b2_ 9412 Am Crys S 1st pf 6_. 8!x Am Encaustic = 74 Am & Foreign Pwr_. 4614 Am & For Pw $6 pf._ 54 Am & For Pw §7 pf_ 20% Am & For Pw 2d pf_ 18 Am Hawaiian (1) _ 62 Am Hide & Leather. 37'2 Am Hide & L pf (3). 4612 Am Home Pr t2.40__ 215 Am Ice = 13% Am Interntl (a40c)_ 43 Am Locomotive 114 Am Loco pf (a3) 2 Am Mach & F (1) 10% Am Mach & Met 60c. 501 Am Metals 5 62 Am News (N Y) (3) 11% Am Power & Light_ 551 Am Pw & Lt pf (5)_. 23 Am Radiator t60c - % Am Roll Mill 11.20 . 1 Am Safty Raz (12)_ 231x Am Seating (a213)_ 41 Am Shipbldg (2) 8814 Am Smelt & Ref(3) 141 Am Sm & Ref pf(7).
