PRESIDENT NEARS END OF VACATION Plans to Leave Friday for Washington—Will Attend Banquet Tonight. BY J. RUSSELL YOUNG. WARM SPRINGS, Ga., March 24— With only one more full day in which to enjoy his vacation from Washing- ton, President Roosevelt continues to spend as much time in the open as possible. | He has set his departure for Priday | afternoon, and when he discussed it | with friends today he appeared wist- ful, as he really would like to stay longer. He's feeling fine, is looking the picture of health and has fully en- joyed the rest and ease made possible by his loaf here in this pine hill sec- tion of Georgia In addition, this countryside is be- ginning to look beautiful. Spring has advanced far enough to present a col- orful picture. Peach and pear trees are blooming. Within the past few days the buds on the dogwood trees have been bursting open, as have those of the Judas trees. Wild violets can be seen almost everywhere in the shaded spots. Jonquils, bridal wreath and Cape Jasmine are in full bloom Drives Second-Hand Car. The President never tires of view- ing these beauties of nature as he drives his old, second-hand automo- bile over the dirt roads of the country- side. He delights in pointing out all these evidences of Spring to his com- panions during his motor rides Mr. Roosevelt expects to little more business before returning to his de the White House. For some time, France has had an unofficial “observer” at Salamanca, but because of possible internal dif- ficulties in France, the fact has been kept as quiet as possible. Even so it has aroused the sus- picions of the PFrench Communist party, important unit of Premier Leon Blum's Popular Front govern- ment, and the official party organ L'Humanite has demanded an explana- tion from the foreign office. In diplomatic circles it is known that the French envoy to Salamanca is a former president of the Paris Chamber of Commerce. Needs War Raw Materials. The need for important raw ma- terials of war has been one of the main reasons France has overruled her ideological dislike for the insurgents, and one of the first acts of the French representative at Salamanca was to negotiate the delivery to France of important supplies of pyrites. In one case, at least, the munitions material was delivered to Marseille from insurgent Spain aboard a Nazi freigher. Many French diplomats are con- vinced the danger to France of an in- surgent victory “gressly misrepresented.” They believe, in line with the pub- lic statements of many British states= I men, that “Spaniards will be Span- iards,” and that one of Franco’s first acts, if he should win the war, would | be to turn out the Italian and German soldiers and technical men from his ranks. Gen.
