DAILY SHORT STORY ACE DETECTIVE By Dan Baxter. S ATURDAY morning found Thomas Gibbons V feeling swell. School was out, the sun was bright and warm, Sum- mer vacation was Just a few weeks off; a fellow couldn't help but feel on top of the world, and Tom did. He used to sleep late on Sat- urdays but now that he was 7 he was up and eating breakfast every day at 8 o'clock His pretty, young mother, with whom he adopted a very firm attitude, watched him eat his oatmeal and toast and smiled. The pretense that Tom was a man | was a family institution. The sug- | gestion that he was less than that | would have been made at great sacri- fice, and neither of his good natured and loving parents had any desire to risk the security of being in their son’s good graces. Mrs. Gibbons laughed inwardly as | she watched Tom; his brown curly hair, big dark eyes, healthy sun- burned skin—everything about him | manly and fine. She loved his sense | of importance, yet frequently urged him to be less despotic with the | other boys. “They are young men, | too, Thomas,” she had often said. “Now, mom,” he would answer, “I know how to handle these fellas. They gotta have a leader, you know.” After breakfast Tom went out into the back yard. His shaggy, scandal- ous looking mongrel, Bosco, was usually waiting there for him when he came out, but this time he was nowhere to be seen. Tom whistled for him, then walked out to the street and looked up and down, all to no avail. He sat down on the back stairs to ponder the problem, and he had been there but a moment when he heard a peculiar scraping and rattling down the street, grow- ing louder as it approached. Then Bosco slid around the corner and into the yard, wild-eyed and running for his life. Tied to his tail was a tin can. 'Then he looked * ok ok x M cornered the frightened pup and untied the can. Then, with | Bosco making frantic attempts to express his appreciation — jumping, pawing, licking his master’s hands— Tom sat down to consider what had best be done. The person who tied that can on Bosco's tail didn’t want a fight, else he would have been more direct. The culprit, whoever he was, had in mind merely hurting Tom's dignity by putiing something over on him. Obviously, the thing to do was to find the offender and pound him into a | more respectful submission. Certain kids in the neighborhood, | Tom reflected, could be eliminated immediately as suspects. The Clark | twins were his best pals—they | wouldn't play a trick like that. Neither would Jerry Baker nor Whitey | Lewis, because they wouldn't dare. | Stanton, Carlson and McBride | wouldn't do it; they had dogs them- | selves. That left only Dan Kelly and: Billy Smith. | | | These two kids were Tom's serious eompetition for leadership of the Elm &treet bunch and furthermore, were the only ones likely to be up at this early ! hour. Billy would be helping the de- livery boy at his father's sfore and Dan would be watching his older brother's news- stand at the depot, as he usually did on Saturday morning. 'OM picked up the string and examined it. Just ordinary white cotton wrapping string, too dirty from being dragged by Bosco to tell whether it had been taken from & spool or picked up in the street. Then he looked at the tin can. It was labeled “Con- densed Milk,” and looked to be quite useless as a clue until, just as he was about to throw it away, he noticed its one peculiar feature. Whistling softly, he tied Bosco to the dog house and started down toward the corner. Dan Kelly was sitting on the news- stand talking with his brother when Tom approached the depot, so he decided that the tactful plan would be to see Billy Smith first. Billy didn’t have a big brother. When he walked into the back room of the store he saw Billy cut- ting the tops off some carrots and for a moment he was worried. The presence of a knife might disrupt his entire detection theory. “Hi, Tommy!” Billy called as he saw the “boss” approach. “What are you doin’ up so early’ “Lot of stuff to attend to,” Tom replied, importantly. “Haven't seen my dog around here, have ya?” “Bosco? No, I haven't seen him. Can't ya find him?” * ok ok % “ARE ya sure ya haven't seen him, Smith?” Tom asked, menacingly. “Sure, I'm sure, Gibbons,” replied Smith in all seriousness, at the same time spreading a piece of Wwrapping paper flat upon the counter. “O. K, Billy,” said Tom, carefully observing the action and nodding his head as if satisfied. Feeling more sleuthlike every min- at the tin can. | ute, Tom walked to the front of the store and looked across the street. Dan’s brother had gone and the young merchant was shouting about his latest edition. Tom reviewed his plan for a moment and then walked across the street, “Hi, Dan,” he said very Jjovially, extending his right hand in & gesture of manly friendliness. “Hello, Tom,” replied Dan in a sub- dued tone. He jingled some change, | keeping his right hand deep in his | pocket, The smile faded from Tom's face. He looked hard at Dan and said, very belligerently: “Not shakin’ hands today, Kelly?” “Sure, Tommy, sure I am,” stam- mered Dan, frantically pulling his hand out of his pocket and exposing & bandaged finger. At sight of the bandage, Tom's Jaw tightened. He clenched his tough little fists and stepped closer to the paling Dan Kelly. Then he punched him, once on the nose and once in the stomach. Dan bounced backward and sat hard upon the walk. Tom stood over his victim trium- | phantly and looking highly pleased with his work. You cut yourself on a tin can, Kelly, and left a drop of blood on the edge,” he said, tersely, and with the manner of the ace detective. (Copyright, 1937.) A defensive | overcall by West, coupled with a busi- ness double by his partner, enabled Mr. Malowan to place accurately the | outstanding high cards and save the | setting trick by means of a throw-in | play. After ruffing in dummy Mr. Malowan played a small trump to his @ng, ruffled a second dia- mond, returned to his hand with the king of clubs and ruffed a third dia- mond. A small club was then played to his queen, followed by the king of diamonds, which East trumped. East now played the queen of hearts, and Mr. Malowan, after taking the ace, threw him in with his (East’s) last trump. Declarer had now brought about the situation he desired—East had nothing left but spades and was forced to lead that suit. Being sure that West's overcall and rebid had marked that player with the ace of spades, Mr. Malowan played low, West being forced to win the trick with the ace. Many players not so expert would have led spades themselves and lost the contract. We cannot criticize ‘West’s opening lead too severely. On the bidding he should have known both that declarer held the king of diamonds and dummy was short, and hence should have made the safe opening of a low club. (Copyright, 1937.)
