In demand at small gains were American Gas & Electric, Great At- lantic & Pacific, Montgomery Ward “A,"” Northern States Power “A,” Pio- \neer Gold and Sunshine Mining. Amer- {can Airlines rose around 2. A little lower were Cord, Gulf Oil, International Petroleum, Newmont Mining, Niagara Hudson Power and Wayne Pump. NEW YORK, December 9.—Air Re- duction Co., a leading chemical unit, with plants throughout the country, 14 | announced today an extra dividend of 25 cents a share on common stock and a regular of like amount, both payable January 15 to holders of rec- ord December 31. New York & Honduras. New York & Honduras Rosario Mining Co. voted & dividend of $1.65 on initial stock, payable December 24 to holders of record December 14. It was described as the final payment against 1936 earnings, together with the disbursement usually made in January. Penick & Ford. Penick & Ford, Inc.,, maker of corn products, with plants at New Orleans, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Montgomery, Ala., and Burlington, Vt., declared a divi- dend of 75 cents a share on common " stock, payable December 24 to holders of record December 11. General Printing Ink. General Printing Ink Corp., with plants at Chicago, S8an Francisco, Norwood, Mass., and Toronto, Can- ada, announced a dividend of $2.50 a share on common stock, payable De- cember 23 to holders of record De- cember 17. The previous payment was $1 in October. New York Shipbuilding. New York Shipbuilding Corp. omitted a quarterly dividend of $1.75 on preferred stock, explaining earn- ings did not justify it. Buckner Elected Board Chairman Of New York Life BY tha Associated Press. NEW YORK, December 9.—Thomas A. Buckner, president, was today named chairman of the board of the New York Life Insurance Co. and was succeeded as president by Alfred L. Aiken, vice president and former Bos- ton banker. At the same time Walter Buckner, vice president, was elected executive vice president. The elections took place at the regular monthly meeting of the board of directors. Aiken, 66, years old, had a long ca- reer in banking before joining the New York Life as second vice presi- dent in 1924. He started work for the insurance company in 1894 as asisst- ant manager of its Northeastern de- partment. Four years later he left it to become assistant cashier of the State National Bank of Boston. In 1914 he was named first governor of the Federal Reserve Bank of Bos- ton, which post he held four years, leaving it to assume the presidency of the Shawmut National Bank. Ruark. general manager of the Motor and Equipment Wholesalers' Associa- tion, described chain stores as “anti- social” in an address yesterday at the organization's annual convention. “Chain store methods,” Ruark said, “reduce the return to producers and 80 force down wages and contribute to unemployment.” He said the ratio of chain stores to independent retailers in the automobile business had increased greatly in the last seven years and that the inde- pendents would be “squeezed out of business.” George N.
