In introducing Blaine B. Coles, re- cently elected president of the trust division of the American Bankers' As- sociation, it should be stated that he is a man of un- usual ability and wide interests. Now vice pres! dent of the First National Bank, Portland, Oreg., he was born in 1894 in Wiscon- © sin and educated at the University of Oregon. He practiced law be- fore becoming counsel for a bank. His ad- vancement to his present position was rapid. A director in the First National Bank, and the Portland Remedial | Loan Association, he is president of a land company and a water company and of the Five-States Timber Co. Mr. Coles takes an active interest in civic affairs, being president of the Portland Junior Symphony Orchestra Association, a director of the Oregen State Motor Association, a trustee of the Good Samaritan Hospital, Port- Jand, and chancellor of the Episcopal Diocese of Oregon. In banking circles he has served as # member of the Legislative Commit- tee of the Oregon Bankers' Ascocia- tion and has been president of the Trust Companies Association of Ore- gon. During the past year he was first vice president of the trust di- vision of the American Bankers' As- gociation. Rural Retail Sales Up. Daily average of general merchan- dise in small towns and rural areas for September were about 18 per cent higher in dollar volume than for September, 1935, and were 25 per cent above those for the same month of 1934, the Bureau of Forelen and Domestic Commerce reports. | Sales for September increased about 27 per cent from August, or consider- | ably more than the usual increase at this season of the year. The seasonal- 1y adjusted index rose to 123} for September, on the basis of 1929-1931 &s 100, from 112 for August and 114!2 for July. Sales for the first nine months of the year were 1315 per cent | above those r the corresponding period of 1935. Daily average sales of grocery chain | stores for September showed an in- crease of about 2 per cent in dollar wvolume, as compared with September, 1935, and were 7 per cent above the &ame month of 1934 Average daily sales for the flrst‘ nine months of the year were about 3 per cent above those for the cor- responding period of 1935. Insurance Men Are Honored. | Prederic M. Nettleship, secretary of Bgencies of the Equitable Life Insur- | ance Co. of Washington, was elected chairman of the industrial section of | the American Life Convention, which | has just concluded its thirty-first an- | nual meeting at Dallas, Tex. Dunng‘ the last year the new chairman has been secretary of the section. Di.s-l patches state that the convention was | largely attended and attracted wide tnterest among life insurance men. | J. G. Hopkins, Washington repre- | eentative of the Lincoln National Life Insurance Co., has won unusual honors by qualifying at this early | date for the company's 1937 conven- tion. Although the test period is only | half over, he has already won his| seat at the conference. With the completion of the convention require- ments, he has become one of the| concern’s outstanding producers. Among Washington visitors to Wall Btreet during the last week for the | purpose of getting a line on new issues | coming soon and checking up on other financial developments were James | Parker Nolan of Folger, Nolan & | Co., and Mark Sullivan, jr., of Huchin- closs, Parker & Redpath. Leading Washington brokers express considerable opposition to the sug-; gestion made in New York that the New York Stock Exchange daily trad- ing sessions be kept open until 4 o'clock. The opinion seems to be here that very little more business would be done in a six-hour session than in the present five-hour session, but that the clerks would have to work & good deal later after the closing of the market than they do now. Edwin Sparks has joined the local office of the National Life In- surance Co. of Vermont as pro- duction manager, after being assist- ant manager of another company. Mr. Sparks at- tended the Uni- versity of Ten- nessee, United States Naval/ Academy and the National Law School in Wash- ington. Sparks. Part-Time Banking Legal. Part-time branch banking is legal wnder the Pennsylvania banking code, according to an opinion obtained from Attorney General Charles J. Margi- ottl by Luther A. Harr, Secretary of Banking.
