By the Assoctated Press. NEW YORK, October 9.—The practically all lines of merchandise featured retail distribution this week, Dun & Bradstreet sald today in the weekly review. “Although proceeding briskly,” the agency said, “wholesale trade did not equal the previous week'’s showing, de- spite the more generous covering of holiday needs. “Industrial operations in the con- sumer divisions assumed a quicker pace, and production schedules of dur- able goods were set ahead in an effort to catch up on mounting backloge.” Retail trade throughout the coun- try was estimated at 12 to 18 per cent ahead of the same week in 1935. “Inclement weather and rising tem- peratures slackened the advance in some districts,” the review said, “but | the increase over the previous week’s showing ranged from 2 to 7 per cent.” | Percentage increases over 1935 in the major geographical areas were. New England, 12 to 15; East, 10 to 20; Middle West, 18 to 25; Northwest, 15 to 22; South, 15 to 30; Southwest, 15 to 25, and Pacific coast, 12 to 20. “With the buying public in the most since 1929, the “the number of lines that fell within the inclusiveness of con- sumer demand was in many instances the most extended in six years.” FOREIGN MARKETS. Utilities Power Chief Is Reported To Have Resigned By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, October 9.—The Her- ald Tribune says Harley L. Clarke has submitted his resignation as president of Utilities Power & Light Co. to the Atlas Corp., the investment house which acquired his controlling interest in the system from the Reconstruction Finance Corp., more than a year ago. At the same time, the paper says, Clarke was reported to hold an op- tion to buy all of Atlas’ holdings in the giant utility system, which total more than $20,000,000. The option to buy Atlas' holdings was said to ex- pire Saturday, the date his resigna- tion is to take effect, the paper said, adding that there were reports of ac- tion by Clarke to invalidate his letter of resignation and extend the time of the option. An official of the company, who would not permit use of his name, asserted last night, however, that Clarke had failed to obtain the option. e DIVIDENDS ANNOUNCED EW YORK. DETROIT, October 9.—I. B. Bab- cock, ‘president of the Yellow Truck & Coach Manufacturing Co. of Pon- | tiac, Mich, announced a special meeting of stockholders at Portland, Me., November 4 will act on pro- posals to reduce the capital and | change the capital stock structure of | the company. | One proposal, he said, is payment | this year of preferred dividends in | arrears to the extent of approximate- ly $4,500,000. Another is the saie at $10 a share to class B and common stockholders of 900,000 additional shares of class B stock of par value $1 a share. Par value of both class B and common stock would be re- qgiced from $10. to $1 a share. Babcock said consummation of the | plan before December 31, 1936, would avert a tax payment of approximately $900,000 on undistributed profits. A letter to stockholders said that “the proposed changes are necessary in view of certain provisions of the revenue act of 1936 which impose a tax on undistributed net income of corporations despite the fact a cor- | poration such as yours has a capital | deficit ‘and may not legally declare dividends.” The letter said that General Mo- tors Corp., “owner of 72545 per cent of the outstanding 7 per cent stock, and of 100 per cent of out- | standing common stock, and 19.235 per cent of outstanding class B stock, has agreed to purchase at $10 per share as many of the additional 900,- | 000 shares of class B stock as are not subscribed for by class B or common stockholders.” Babcock said the change “is desir- able to provide working capital by reason of increases in the volume of business of the company.” He esti- | mated total net sales for 1936 at $58,~ S0000000000000000000000 i CUNDS LONG OR SHORT TERMS 7 INTEREST RATES 7 CONSULT Us We have saved money for others in solving their mort- £age problems.
