EDDY FOX and Mrs. Reddy stil] kept track of their chil- dren who had left home. They knew where each one was living. Two of them, the Timid One and the one who had been known as the Weakling, had left home to- gether and were still living together in a pasture & long way from the Old Pasture where they had been born. It wasn't so far, however, but that their father occasionally visited it. Reddy is at times a great traveler. 8o it was that he visited this pasture on one of his hunting trips and dis- covered the two young Foxes living there. For a time Reddy kept out of sight. He wanted to learn all he could about these children of his without their being aware of it. Finally he made | his presence known. Of course the | two young Foxes were glad to see him. “Would you like to return to your | old home in the Old Pasture?” asked | Reddy. | The young Foxes shook their heads. | Even the Timid One was very positive \ that she didn’t want to return to the | old home. You see, they had tasted e | sheep. Reddy nodded. independence, and nothing can quite | take the place of independence. Reddy grinned. “I'm glad to hear you say it,” said he. “You seem to be nicely fixed here. If you are careful I don’t see why you shouldn't get along ‘very nicely. Of course you’ll separate | after a while and each have a home of your own. There is a Dog that lives not far from here, a Dog who delights in chasing Foxes. I advise you to keep out of his way.” “We know all about him,” said the | smart young Fox who, you remember, had been chased by that Dog and had broken the trail with running water. Reddy shook his head. “No, you | don't,” said he. “You may know ‘wmclhlng about him, but you don’t |knom all about him. Tell me What you do know.” So the young Fox told him she had tried to break the trail by jumping off to one side, but had failed. She | told how she had run in the flock of “You discovered for yourself, my | dear, an old Fox trick. It’s a good one, $350 Dails. | Bltht | All_sports and amusements free | too. I have even jumped on the back of one of those critters and ridden a little way. I suppose you got rid of that Dog then.” “No,” replied the young Fox. “He found my trail again after a while, | but I made a great discovery; I dis- covered that running water carries no scent.” Then she told Reddy just what she had done, how she had waded in the | water of the brook and how the Dog | had at last given up. | “It was very clever of you, my dear,” said Reddy. “It was very clever of | you. I am glad that you found out | for yourself the value of running water. It is a great help to a Fox who | is being chased, but there are Dogs | smarter than that one. It is well to| know some other tricks. You are not always where you can get to running water and Dogs can be fooled, even smart Dogs, without the help of water. Take Bowser the Hound, who lives up near where your old home was; it's a smart Fox that can fool Bowser. A young Dog is more easily fooled. “I wish you would show me some | of your tricks to fool a Dog,” sald the smart young Fox wistfully. Reddy abruptly got to his feet. “Come with me, my dear,” said he. “We’ll go down and see if we can find a Dog. PERCY Children RUBY-THROATED HUMMING BIRD (Archilochus columbris). BY LILLIAN COX ATHEY. AVE you invited humming birds to your garden? All you have to do is have deep-throated flowers of brilliant hue, or fasten a bright bit of yellow or orange | to the neck of a tiny, slender bottle, and anchor it to the branch of a low shrub or tree. Hummers have wonderful vision. They love bright colors. They enjoy sugar and water sirup. It does not trouble th. to sip it from a glass vial. Many have thought humming birds were scarce. This one is the only humming bird with a range east of the Mississippl. But he has many cousins in the Southwestern Staies. In the | long trail to the States and Canada, in order to bring up their families in “the old home town.” During the days of courtship many battles are fought by the males. They are experts in dueling, and race to- ward each other’s breasts with fixed bayonets. Lady hummers are not usually in defense of their homes. “Find the cleverly hidden nest, if you can,” is their challenge to nature lovers. It is an exquisite affair, so light it can be sent through the mail for 3 cents. It is on the branch of a tree, where lichens and knots are to be found. Sometimes this tiny lichen- decorated cup is fastened high up from flower-bedecked meadows and open | spaces close to the woods, hundreds of | them may be seen darting back and forth. They look like animated jew- els, which they most certainly are. One of the charming things about these smallest birds of ours is their friendliness and willingness to become & part of your garden. In a short time humming birds get so used to you that | they will sit on your finger, if you hold ouL a flower for them to sip from. There are, we have been told, abou m species of humming birds and about 150 subspecies. They are all of | the New World. All Winter, they spend their vacations in the tropics. Leav- ing behind them an abundance of food | and lovely weather, they take the long.
