By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, August 21.—The As- sociated Press adjusted weekly index of electric power production advanced 08 of & point last week to 1022, a new 1935 record and the highest level since the first week of February, 1930. For the corresponding week of 1934 the index stood at 96.5, and for the week ended August 10, it was 101.4. The index, based on 1929-30 as 100, is adjusted for seasonal and long- term trends. The range of recent weeks follow: 1935. 1934. 1022 974 919 941 919 802 The Edison Electric Institute re- ported today power output in the United States for the week ended Au- gust 17 at 1,832,695,000 kilowatt hours, an increase of 0.7 of 1 per cent from the previous week. Compared with the same week of 1934, production last week was 9.5 per cent higher, and for the week ended August 10 the rise over the corresponding 1934 week was 9.7 per cent. All sections of the country reported an increase last week over the 1934 week. R. E. Wood, president of Sears, Roe- buck & Co., said here that “business is definitely on the upgrade.” Regarded generally as a cautious speaker on matters of business, Cen. Wood emphiasized in an informal talk to business and professional men of the city that in his opinion condi- tions “are pointing to business pros- perity” to a greater degree than at| any time since 1929. “Our mail order business, a definite and certain criterion of conditions generally, is increasing surprisingly as the months go by, and we look for & return to better business times within the coming months,” the business executive said. NEW YORK, August 21.—Daily average gross crude ofl production in the United States increased 51,800 barrels in the week ended August 17, totaling 2,708,650 barrels, the Ameri- can Petroleum Institute’s weekly sum- mary indicates. Refineries representing 89.5 per cent of estimated total capacity, operated at 75.2 per cent of their capacity, re- ported daily average runs of crude oil to stills as 2,560,000 barrels. The cotton spinning industry was | reported today by the Census Bureau to have operated during July at 73.5 per cent of capacity, on a single shift basis, compared with 74.6 during June this year, and 74.3 during July last year. Spinning spindles in place July 31 totaled 30,110,078, of which 22.312,384 were active at some time during the month, compared with 30,435,894 and 22,709,200 for June this year and 30,937,816 and 24,417,682 for July last year. Active spindle hours for July totaled 5,157,527,985, or an average of 171 hours per spindle in place, compared with 5,083,383,303 and 167 for June this year and 5,151,979,342 and 167 for July last year. Spinning spindles in place July 31 in cotton-growing States totaled 19,- 340,858, of which 16,265,210 were ac- tive at some time during the month, compared with 19,339,416 and 16,486,- 278 during June this year, and 19,326,- 462 and 17,127,942 during July last year. Active spindle hours in cotton- growing States for July totaled 3,977, per spindle in place, compared with 3,901,206,789 and 202 for June this year, and 3,848,385,222 and 199 for July last year. NEW YORK, August 21.—Report- ing a further rise in steel operations, Iron Age said today that the current movement “is one of the most unex- pected upward swings in the history of the industry.” The rate of ingot production has’ advanced to 50, per cent of capacity, as compared with 49 per cent last week, according to the publication’s calculation.
