CLEVELAND, August 12—T. M. Girdler, chairman of the Republic Steel Corp., sald in a letter to stock- holders today that Republic and Cerrigan-McKinney Steel Co. will | proceed immediately to complete the ! merger of the two concerns. | Girdler said a stockholders' meeting | set for August 15 will be postponed ! pending completion of final dslalls; leading to the merger. Officers of the company stated they | expected that an amended registration | Securities and Exchange Commission | early next week and that the stock- holders’ mid-September. i The action followed the recent De- partment of Justice announcement | that it would not appeal the decision of the Federal District Court which | refused to enjoin the merger. Girdler's letter sald, in part: “Diligent effort will be made to complete promptly registration with | the Federal Securities Commission of the securities to be issued under the plan; also to effect final arrange- ments for the sale of new bonds to be | issued, to prepare and mail to stock- | holders the required prospectus and to | complete all other necessary arrange- | ments.” 'BALANGE ACHIEVED | AT LUMBER MILLS |Survey Committee Reports Better Ratio Between Output and Sales. For the first time in its four years of existence the Special Lumber Sur- vey Committee does not recommend a reduction of lumber stocks. The com- mittee’s quarterly report to the De- partment of Commerce for the thira quarter of 1935 finds that a reason- able balance of production and con- sumption of lumber has been substan- tially Testored. Lumber consumption “for the first Kalf of 1935 is estimated at 8,002, 000,000 feet as against 7,884.000.000 in the first half of 1934. Production in the first haif of 1935 was 2 per cent ligher than in the corresponding pe- riod of 1934 in the operating mills, but 1ot production is indicated to be &bcut 18 per cent less. This falling- off is largely due to the closing of many small mills which were operat- ing & year ago. However, the belief 1s expressed that total production for the yea: will be about the same as last year. FOREIGN EXCHANGES. NEW YORK. August chunge steady.
