The increased attendance in the board rooms recently attests the tre- 'mendous concern present utility stock- holders are taking in the new develop- mments. Every board room in the coun- try finds many investors and traders who have been carrying utility stocks for many months and have a heavy *paper loss” due to the prolonged war on holding companies. It looks now as if some kind of a truce would be reached soon. If un- necessary holding companies are placed under regulation instead of being abolished a good many market observ- ers look for a general advance in the stock market. They predict this in spite of the usual Summer lull in the big market. I B. A. Officers Nominated. Along with the announcement from Chicago that Orrin G. Wood of Esta- brook & Co., Boston, has been nomi- nated to be president of the Invest- ment Bankers' the board of Association of America mnext year, comes the report that Y. E. Booker, head of the investment firm by that name in this city and president of the Washington Stock Exchange, has heen nomi- nated for a three-year term as a member of governors. Both will be elected at White Sulphur Springs in October. . The honor has come to Mr. Booker largely because of his hard work as chairman of the Investment Bankers' Association Code Committee for this district which includes Washington, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia. North and South Carolina. He held many meetings while the code was in force and has tried hard to retain the good features among investment houses since then. McCombs Takes Insurance Helm. » J. E. McCombs, general agent Berk- shire Life Insurance Co., was inaug- urated as president of the District of Columbia Life Insurance Association at the Willard Hotel in the presence ©f 200 members. In his inaugu- ral address, Mr. McCombs out- lined his plans for the coming year and stated he hoped to keep the selling of life insurance in the District on the same high plane it is at present. Mr. McCombs will co-operate with John A Marshall, insur- ance commis- sioner of the District. in all agency matters pertinent to the underwrit- ers of the District. Mr. McCombs is one of the best known life insurance men in Wash- ‘ington, having sold a large volume ‘of insurance over a period of 14 years here. He has held many important offices in the Underwriters' Associa- tion and as its head expects to have B very successful year. One of the new president's first bfficial acts was to appoint John P. Lynch of the New York Life Insur- #nce Co., chairman of the Publicity Committee. Mr. Lynch is a former mldem of the Underwriters' Associa- s Orrin G. Wood 3. E. McCombs p Lincoln Cuts Savings Rates. In line with similar action taken by good many banks all over the coun- try, the Lincoln National Bank has ‘Yeduced -interest rates on savings de- posits, eective July 1. In announc- ing the maximum rates of interest to be paid on savings accounts until further notice, the bank says: “On accounts showing a balance of $2500 or less, 2!z per cent per pnnum. “On accounts showing a balance of more than $2,500 and less than $5,000, 2:2 per cent on the first $2,500 and 2 per cent on the remainder. “On accounts showing a balance of more than $5.000, 2!2 per cent on the first $2,500, 2 per cent on the next $2,500, and 1'2 per cent on the re- mainder.” The board of directors has changed the by-laws relative to interest on savings accounts to conform with the new rates, the action being taken on June 27. The reason for the reduc- tion, of course, is the present low rates which the banks can earn on the money they lend. River Line Votes Dividend. Directors of the Norfolk & Wash- ington Steamboat Co. have declared the semi-annual dividend of 3 per cent, payable July 15 to stockholders ©f record at the end of June. Howard Moran, vice president of the American Security & Trust Co., is taking a month’s vacation. now being at Atlantic City. James C. Dulin, jr., treasurer of the same bank, 4s on his way home from Alaska. Donald W. Larson, who was recent- ly appointed assistant secretary of the District Bankers' Association, has been made secretary, his work com- ing under the supervision of Hilleary G. Hoskinson, third vice president of the association, and a vice president of the Riggs National Bank. Capital Transit Stronger. Special Dispatch to The Star. | 'NEW YORK, July 3—With high | temperatures promised for at least S¢ the next 60 days, dealers of electrical | refrigerators, starting their Summer | sales drive next Monday, plan to cash | e in on the sun’s rays and recoup some of the business lost during the cold and rainy days last Spring. | Although electrical refrigerator 1 | manufacturers stepped up operations |25 per cent during the usual produc- |tion season and prices per unit were ® | the lowest in history. due partly to “bootlegging” operations, sales were not up to expectations. Electrical refrigerator sales in the | first half of this year are estimated by the trade at 1,149.462 units. compares with 1,003,574 in the first half of 1934 and 666,750 in the first half of 1933, Second-quarter sales this year, estimated at 716.931, com- period and 554,107 in the 1933 period. The trade has not vet gathering of May statistics, figures of/the second quarter and first half of the year are rough guesses. Salesmen in the larger cities, espe- cially in the North and East, are hope- ful that temperatures during July and August will equal, if not exceed, those prevailing in 1933, when refrigerator sales were 203,819, as against third- quarter sales last year of only 240,021 units. With the incentitve to preserve food stronger than in 1933 or 1934, sincd average prices are higher, and with refrigerator prices lower and install- ment financing more easily arranged, refrigerator salesmen have many points in their favor as they attempt | to hang up a record for third-quarter sales.
