1. 5. BONDS GAIN AS OFFERINGS LAG Corporates Show General Steadiness—Some Rails Rise Fractionally. By the Associated Pre: NEW YORK, June 8 (#)—The bond market showed general steadi- ness today in light trading. United States Governments hard- ened a little mainly as a result of a drying up of offerings. Several of the second-grade rails were boughi at fractionally higher levels, but there was no evidence of unusual interest in the carrier group by reason of President Roosevelt's recommendation of legislation which would subject the rallroad’s competitors to an equal dose of Federal control. Issues which were transferred at moderately im- proved prices included American Tel- ephone 5s, Bethlehem Steel 5s, St. Paul 58, Duquesne Light 43s, Erie 58, Goodyear 5s, Missouri Pacific 55, New York Central 5s, Nickel Plate 4i3s, Pacific Gas 5s, Frisco 4155 and West~ ern Union 5s. American & Foreign Power 5s dip- ped half a point to 66 and Southern Railway 4s eased 3 to 38%. Other active issues or. the minus side showed only negligible losses. Treasury 3%s of 1941 showed the widest gain in the Federal group, ris- ing 6-32ds of a point to 108.4. There were other advances ranging from 1-32d to 3-32ds and Home Owners’ Loan issues moved in this trend. French government bonds con- tinued the recovery which started yes- terday on the announcement of for- mation of the Laval cabinet. The %18 duplicated Friday's upswing by BONDS ON N. Y. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, June 8.—After an frregular start, the curb market de- veloped a steady to firm tone in all divisions today, with the aid of short covering in metals and oils. Trading ‘was fairly active. Advances of 1 to 2 points were shown by Bunker Hill & Sullivan, Gulf Oil, New Jersey Zinc, New York & Honduras Rosario, Sunshine Min- ing, Sherwin Williams and Armstrong Cork. Singer Mfg. got up 7 points on small sales. While some irregularity persisted utilities, such trading favorites as American Gas and American Super- power were able to work a trifle hlchzr and losses in Niagara Hudson and Cities Service were held to ex- tremely small fractions. By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, June 8—Firmness de- veloped in grain prices early today after a sag. at the onset. Buying was made more or less on indications that to a great extent the domestic wheat harvest would be a late one. Opening unchanged to }; cent lower, July, 82%;-%, wheat soon rallled. Corn started %-% down, July, 80%, and then recovered. Upturns of wheat prices amounted at times to 1% cents a bushel. Action of the market was associated in vari- % | ous quarters with reports that a fresh movement in Congress would begin on % | Monday intended to force hoisting of silver to $1.29 an ounce. Houses with connections East were conspicuous on the buying side of wheat. A big East- ern speculator was reported to have switched his market position and to have covered a large short line of wheat. Corn, rye and provisions climbed with wheat, the corn market quickly scoring a full cent gain, rye more than that. Oats sympathized with strength of other cereals. Resistance to price jumps led later to fairly active selling and to moder- ate reactions. Profit taking on the 90% | part of early buyers was also much in 14 | evidence. NEW YORK, June 8.—The cotton market recovered part of its recent declines during the last week after heavy liquidation from domestic and foreign sources had been absorned. An improved technical position, trade buying and sn unfavorabie view of the weather contributed to tke re- covery. At the same time efforts be- ing made by the Agricultural Aamin- istration to revise the agricultural program in the light of the Supreme Court decision on the N. R. A. created the impression that the cotton con- trol program would be continued. closed yesterday at 1i.13, compared with 10.64 a week ago. While reported hesitancy of agricul- cural officials to formulate a loan pro. gram for the nexi cotton crop was credited partly to the question of the constitutionality uf some phases of the Bankhead control act, it was indi- cated that no official announcement on & loan was to be expected for another montk or two. The July situation was being care- fully watched by the trade owing to reports that the noducers pool man- T | agers would be willing to take delivery on July contracts against holdings of 35,000 bales on July futures if the price fell below 13 cents. Later an announcement was made that the pool had purchased 25,000 bales of certificated cotton from spot interests. Except for some buying by Liver- pool, foreign interest in the market tapered off following recent heavy liguidation from abroad due to the French political situation, Further cool and moist’ conditions in the three Western cotton States fur- : thel‘del“ldthncmplhrtflm. al- Mluhemmllflpmm ji¢ | reported. ar and 148,083 l it hi 172,084 fase: vear snd S1 6% | Mohawk H 2d pf. By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, June 8—Grain trade attention is focusing sharply just now on whether wheat price downturns of late have discounted in full the im- provement of crop prospects. Pending issuance of the Govern- ment crop report Monday, the first definite official appraisal of crop. progress since May 1, many traders, are taking the stand that declines of prices on the score of a better out~ look for crops have little if any fur- ther warrant. A good deal of talk is current, too, that the domestic Winter wheat harvest, taken as a whole, will prove to be anywhere from 10 days to 3 weeks late, and that the June Spring wheat condition is usual- ly the peak of the crop. Compared to a week ago, wheat 2| this morning was down 1%4-2'4 cents, with corn 135-23; up. Oats at ¥, de- cline to )2 advance, and provisions showing 2 cents to 42 cents gain. Crops Late in Europe Also. Lateness of the wheat crop in this country is given added significance in some quarters because of re- ports that similar conditions prevail throughout Europe. Bulls assert that with supplies of old wheat scanty, both in the United States and overseas, a fairly tight marketing position could easily de- velop, with Canada holding a whip hand if only for the time being. European reports indicate millers and merchants are carrying much less wheat than a year ago, with offers diminished from Argentina and Ause tralia alike. Leading traders picture the corn market outlook as a very mixed one, with the short seller in July contracts here face %o face with a big current premium for immediate delivery corn 85 against a future delivery. This premium has to be overcome before short selling can become attractive. 4| On the other hand is likelihood that increasing abundance of competitive feeds may induce farmers to sell corn more freely as soon as fleld opera- tions are completed. Oat Prices Follow Corn. Imports of Argentina corn have thus far given little competition away from the United States seaboard. Any for 2,000,000 bushels of corn now on hand in Georgian Bay ports seems difficult at present. Oats are following corn rather than wheat. Provisions reflect curtailment of Chicago stocks of lard.
