JAPAN WILL SEEK NAVY GOMPROMISE Delegates to Confer Infor- mally With British on New Pact. By the Associated Press. LONDON, December 24.—The Jap- anese naval delegation received in- structions from Tokio yesterday to dis- cuss with the British possibilities for a future compromise on the basis of British suggestions for a new naval limitations treaty. The British suggestions recognized equality only in principle for Japan, but there was no indication whatever that Japan was surrendering her original demands for actual tonnage equality. It was stated in official quarters that the renewed contact does not mean reopening the naval conversa- tions, but that informal discussions between the two delegations, British and Japanese, will be held for several ‘weeks, Naval and diplomatic circles re- garded the move as an effort of the Japanese to bring about future con- versations or a conference in the Spring. The Americans, however, viewed it as a new attempt to force the British and Americans to junk the principles of the Washington treaty. In Japanese ouarters there appeared to be renewed hope that a future com- promise was a distinct possibility. The Japanese, who had planned to remain here unofficially despite the termination of the naval conversa- tions, probably will begin their dis- cussions with the British before the American delegates sail for the United States Saturday. By a Staff Correspondent of The Star. THRIFTON VILLAGE, Va, De- cember 24.—Two small children wers burned to death in their home here last night in a fire believed to have started when they attempted to con- nect the Christmas tree lighting cir- cuit. ‘They were Peggy Ann, 3, and Richard, 7, children of Mr. and Mrs. Manuel Lazo, Arlington County real estate broker. The parents had left their Malvern place home only & few minutes before the tragedy. ‘The flames appeared to have spread from the corner in which the deco- rated Christmas tree stood in the second floor home. Neighbor Sees Flames, The children’s parents had gone to Clarendon, and were to meet the children’s uncle, Hector Lazo, who was bringing toys and other Christ- mas treats from his home at 3040 Porter street in Washington. John A. Neu, a neighbor, saw the inside of the Lazo home burst into flame, and calling the fire depart- ment, rushed with his daughter, Margaret to give ald. They were balked by flames in their attempts to reach the second floor, and stood helplessly by. Mr, and Mrs. W. C. Jansen, occupants of the first floor, were at church at the time. When the firemen arrived flames were pouring from all the second- floor windows. George Watts and O. Krigbaum, firemen, plunged into the house to find the children, risking their own lives. Peggy was in her crib, near death from the smoke. She died on the way to Georgetown Hospital. Boy Wanders Into Fire, “Dicky,” as he was known to neigh- bors and friends, had wandered, terror stricken, into the flames. He was dead when the firemen found him. The body was taken to the Ives undertak- ing establishment in Clarendon after it was brought out by P. A, Charles, a fireman, who was burned on the hands. Every available piece of fire appa- ratus in the county was turned out, as about 60 firemen fought the flames. More than $3,000 worth of damage was done to the building. Searchers had difficulty locating Mr. and Mrs. Lazo in Clarendon and when the parents returned to their charred home both almost collapsed. They were taken to the home of a friend, Ashton C. Jones, and later to the home of Hector Lazo in Washing- ton. Mr. Lazo was taken to Emer- gency Hospital during the night, suf- fering from nervous shock. Mr. Lazo formerly was an instructor at George Washington University, as was his brother Hector. Mrs. Lazo, the former Anita Ignatius, is from Havana, Cuba. Deaths R.eported.
