August 18—The Curb Exchange closed irregularly lower to- day after staging a brisk advance in the forenoon and then coming down with other markets in the afternoon. A slight rally near the end closed the list above the lows of the day and most of the losses in the leaders were con- fined to fractions. Stutz Motor was a weak feature of the late trading, sell- ing down more than 5 points as it touched 7. Carlot shipments of fruits and vege- tables continue rather light, but market supplies of most lines are ample, with aild of motor truck receipts, according to the United States Department of Agriculture report. Cantaloupes, melons and tomatoes till are abundant and low in price. Potato shipments are light. The m: jority of Eastern carlots are from New Jersey and Long Island. Maine pota- toes are beginning to arrive. New York State comes into the picture now as the leading Eastern source of carlot apples, cabbage, lettuce, celery, car- rots and mixed vegetables. ‘The onion movement is active from Massachusetts, New York and the Mid- dle West, and weekly totals now are larger than they were a year ago. New York and Southern Virginia are shipping most of the Eastern cab- bage. North Carolina and Maryland are shipping many sweet potatoes. Virginia is shipping more carlot peaches than any Eastern section. Prices are holding fairly well with no general trend. Potatoes and onions sell above the lowest of mid-August but recoveries have not been sustained in all markets.
