A—6 TERGENT COTTON CHEERGEORGANS Growers Declare Prosperity| Will.Return Under Pres- “ent Prices. . By the Associated Press. ATLANTA, June 30.—Ten-cént cot- | ton is a harbinger of returning pros- | perity and a stepping-stone back to in- dependence for the Southern farmer, in | the opinion of Georgia growers. Planters in this State have made | money at that price and higher end lost it in recent years because they kept | growing their staple crop. Herman Delaperriere of Hoschton, Ga., who, with his brother, operates a 12,000-acre farm, divided into urits of 25 to 300 acres, producing annually 1,000 to 1,500 bales of cotton, says a profit can be made on cotton at 10 cents a pound. “Ten-cent cotton means the farmer | ‘will be able to buy needed supplies and | pay some of his old debts,” Delaperriere said. “He can make a profit at that price, and when the cotton farmers make a profit the Nation prospers.” 175 Plows Operated. On the Delaperriere plantation 175 lows are operated. Each plow can | ake care of about 30 acres, of which | sald., The average family will be able | to provide its own clothing and shoes | on 10-cent cotton, whereas for the last two or three years the Government has had to supply shoes, overalls and other clothing. Several Years Required. “Ten-cent cotton will do more t6 re- store economic conditions than all the relief appropriations the Government has made or can make,” Delaperriere asserted. “Farmers can buy their own land and pay for it with 10-cent cotton. They cannot do it all at once. It will require several years at this price to restore conditions to normal.” Besides cotton, Delaperriere grows 20,000 bushels of corn and 15,000 to 20,000 bushels of oats each year to feed his live stock. Each tenant plants corn and other feed crops in proportion to his_cotton. “This is the only way,” he said, “that any cotton grower can expect to make a profitable living. The $50 net cash from 10 acres of cotton does not by any means represent all he makes, for he grows his corn, plants a garden of veg- looks after his part of the rd and keeps a cow and chickens.” A Fulton County farmer, who annu. ally tends about 15 acres of cotton, was not so optimistic, fearing that 10 cents a pound would not hold. "It means nothing now,” he sald, “for the farmer has no cotton to sell. By ! next Fall, when we little fellows are ! ready to sell what the boll weevil leaves I us, the price likely will pe down again.” Weevils Eat Up Crop. ‘This farmer, however, sald he could make a decent living on his 75-acre farm if cotton should bring 10 cents a pound consistently. Before the boll weevil came, he said, he got an average of 11 to 12 bales from his annual crop, but now his average is about four bales. The Fulton farmer believes in grow- ing his own food and fced first of all and growing enough cotton to pay his texes and buy his clothing. BRUSSELS, June 30.—Edmond Mor- ren, the Belglan Mason, whose “pa- | triotism” led him to smash the famous | Louvain University library balustrade & | second time last month, was sentencad yesterday to one yeer in prison, Morren not only declined to express regret for his action, but declared his determination not to allow any balus- trade except that of Whitney Warren, the American architect, to remain on the library. Warren’s balustrade, barred by the| Belgian Supreme Court, was to have| borne the Latin inscription: “De-| stroyed by German fury; restored by American generosity.” It was a subject of_controversy for years. ‘When Morren climbed to the roof of the library five years ago and smashed the balustrade for the first time, he was sentenced to three months’ impris- onment, but the sentence was suspended. ‘When he performed the act again last June 4, he surrendered to police, say- ing: “You see there are still true Bel- glans.” i Minute Mystery Solution to THE STOLEN PEARLS. Be- cause the footprints leading to the library overlapped those leading from it.
