By the Associated Press. | Cotton-spinning operations during May struck their fastest pace since Oc- tober, 1929, reflecting a revival of buy- ing and increased demand for their products. The Census Bureau announced todsy that during the month United States | mills operated an aggregate of 8309,- | 664,722 spindle hours. In October, 1929, | the number of hours was 9,005,849,000. | Since 1929 the number of spindles in | place has dropped from about 34,000,000 | to 30,959,216, as of May 31. Standard Oil of Indiana in the last hour attained a new 1933 high at 327, 8s did Gulf Oil of Pennsylvania at 603, Creole Petroleum at 8, Imperiod Oil at 12 and International Petroleum at 163g. Humble Oil at one time ran up to 87, its previous high, up 6 points net. Utilities moved more narrowly than the oils. Electric Bond & Share, in the closing minutes, was up only a fraction. Cities Service was easier most of the session, but came back to show a small gain near the end. Deere & Co. was & strong spot, at a pew high for the year at 30%, up 5 paints. In addition to these the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co. has obtained a contract for one of the large Boulder Dam turbines. | The company will build two moderate | size freighters for the A. H. Bull Co. of New York at a cost of about $2, 000,000 each. | Work on the ships will begin imme- | diately, the contracts calling for their completion in 11 and 12 months, re- spectively. They will be 7,500 each. ! The Newport News plant at this time is employing about 4,000 men on a five- day week basis. Men's Wear to Be Marked Up.
