STONE. Sales in Washington department stores in May were 8.7 per cent lower than in May, 1932, according to the monthly retail business comparisons made public by the Federal Reserve! Bank of Richmond today. The May | showing reveals marked improvement over average business for the first five months of the year when sales were 16 | per cent under the figure for the like period a year ago. Department store sales in the fifth Federal Reserve district in May, 1933, averaged 5 per cent less than sales in May, 1932, exactly the same figure shown for April in compariscn with | April last year, but the May record was really better than April's because | sales in the carlier month were in-! creased by the occurrence of Easter | during that month.
