Dewitt, :Lmnermumr general, and aides that the Army could supply a comparable kit at prices ranging from 75 cents to 85 cents. Be Vier, in a statement to the com- mittee Wr.dnesday, challenged the Army to prove is claim, using prices of May 15 or immediately before, and the same or equal quality of nationally advertised brands of articles he supplied. He was given the contract on May 15 about two or three hours after a call on Louis McHenry Howe, secretary to President Roosevelt, with a claim that he could save the Government con- siderable money in supplying the toilet articles in a kit. Special Subcommittee. On top of his challenge to the Army | to prove its contention, Be Vier offered | to sell the kits at 10 per cent less than the Army’s lowest price for the same or equal quality articles. ‘Because of the controversy over the prices, the Senate Military Committee, which had been conducting the inquiry into the purchase, set up a special sub- committee of three to go fully into the price question. Chairman Sheppard, Democrat, of Texas, headed the group, with Senators Logan, Democrat, of Kentucky, and Carey, Republican, of Wvoming, the latter author of the resolution for the investigation as members.
