STARTS CLOSNG 05 108 OFFEES Secretary Perkins Affirms | Action, but Declines to Comment. Becretary of Labor Perkins is send- ing out orders closing up many of the district offices of the United States Employment Service. The service has approximately 130 offices in various sec- tions of the country. Confirmation of this action was ob- tained at the Labor Department yester- day, but Miss Perkins declined to com- ment immediately. She said she was preparing a statement explaining her THE EVENING Famous Doll Visits Washington HITTY, ONE HUNDRED YEARS OLD, IS AT LIBRARY BRANCH. She is staying for the present at the boys’ and girls’ room of the Northeastern branch of the Public Library. Her name is Hitty, and she is no more than six and a half inches tall. She is made of ash, tradi- tionally a proper kind of wood for pup- pets. But the most marvelous thing about her is that she is more than a century old, which, of course, is a con- | siderable maturity for a doll. Her somewhat tardy fame derives from the story of the first 10 decades of her career, “Hitty, Her First 100 Years,” written by Rachel Field and illustrated by Dorothy P. Lathrop. In 1930 the book was awarded the New- berry Medal of the American Library Association. The heroine went to Los Angeles for the presentation, and she has been on the go ever since. The demand for her is greater than she can HE most famous doll in the United I States is visiting in Washington. . STAR, WASHINGTON, D. €, WEDNESDAY, APRIL moment when first they beheld her. Trey knew she had had many adven- tures. They surmised she had been on a whaling expedition, had been ship- wrecked in the South Seas, had been an idol in a pagan temple, had been res- cued and brought back to her native country, had been dressed as a bride at Ithe New Orleans’ Cotton Exposition, had had all sorts of thrilling experiences. The book of Hitty's life was written on a tiny island off the coast of Maine. ‘The result is a picture of the develop- ment of American industry, transporta- tion, communicatioh and economic progress during a hundred years. The style is the doll's own. She dictates her memoirs as only a doll could dic- tate. The book became a classic on Right Reserved to publication. Children love it. Grown- ups find it & joy.
