Eventually, it was quite by accident that they made sure their quarry had continued south. At a little village just before Lyons a bright new gasoline | station stood by the road and Alacia, | noting the dashboard indicator, drew | up_ beside 1t. | “Quelie jolie voiture!” said the man who waited on them 4 “You bet she goes agreed proudly. “You won't see many | like her!” | | “Mais out!” protested the man, “on| the contrary, there was one exactly the same in here today. The entrance hall was | ablaze with gilded cases containing a | | bewildering display of brilliant silks, | | and the place had a smart, commercial air which promised the prompt service of what, by now, was a badly needed noonday meal. At table Armand got out the road map and studied it with a puzzled frown. “If only one were clairvoyant!” he | sald, “and could guess which route he | has taken. See, the road branches here at Lyons, and there are two routes |to the Cote d'Azuri; one by Grenoble, through the Alps, which is the shorter, the other across the plains to Avignon and along the coast.” “Which is the better?” “They are equally good at this time of the year,” he said. “It's a tossup!” “Then let'’s toss up!” said Alacia, taking & small coin from her purse. “ItS as good a way of deciding as any, since all we can do is to guess. And I hope his injury | is just serious enough to be interesting.” | ‘There is only one line in that wire | I can't make out!” Armand remarked. | “That one, ‘but certainly it is.’ What on earth does the old boy mean by that? All in- | quiries along the way were unfruitful, | for altbough they asked at every likely | spot. nobody had seen Santini pass. And when well after the dinner hour they drove in under the shadow of the old Papal Palace at Avignon, it was with the realization that they were com- pletely off the trail and could only hope to catch up with the twin car on the Mediterranean coast. After dinner they walked about the quaint cld town and out to the be of the ancient bridge which, built by a studious monk in the eleventh century, has become world famous in a song. They leaned shoulder to shoulder against the parapet and gazed down at the dark waters of the river, while Armand hummed the old nursery rhyme: Surle pont d’Avignon On y danse On y danse! “Dearest!” the girl broke offy, sud- denly, “I want you to do something for me.” “Name it,” said he, “as long as it doesn’t cost money!” “I want you to drive the Europa at Monte Carlo.” “Any time!” said he. “Anywhere! I | love that car, next to you, best of any- | thing in the world!” ‘m not joking,” sald she with earnestness. “I mean In the race!” “What?” he said. “Why not?” she asked. “The car we're | driving is every bit as good as Santint’s, | and don't you see? It won't matter then if be throws the race or not.” “The Europa's honor will be up- held,” he teased her. “I see your point, But would it be allowed?” “There is no limit,” she told him, “on the number of cars entered of any one make. There will be half a dozen Bugattis, and as many Sunrays and a sprinkling of German and English and Italian makes. So far ours is the only American car. Let’s make it two! Wire the International Sporting Club people tomorrow and enter in your own name. Armand, a Europa has got to win this race! It's the crowning Llory of all the work I've done over here. Think of it, if an American car could win! But, of course, that part doesn't mean so much to you as to me!” “Oh, I'm not so sure!” said he. “In less than a years time I may be an American business man myself, don't forget! That is to sa; he added gloomily, “if I can ever get my three guardians to agree on me after this mess!” “Well, they certainly won't think worse of you if you drive that race and win it!” she cried. “Go ahead and en- ter! ANOTHER RAIL LINE OFFERED AS “GIFT” Any One Who Will Operate It Can Get 35-Mile Branch Free From Present Cwner. By the Associated Press. DENVER, January 6.—Another Colo- rado railroad line has been offered to any one who will operate it. The Denver and Rio Grande Western Railway has come forth with,a pro- posal to turn over its narrow gauge branch line extending from Lake City, in Hinsdale County, 35 miles across to Lake Juncticn, in Gunnison County, with only this restriction: The operator is to pay to the rail« road 6 per cent of the salvage value, pey the taxes of the branch and gua- rantee its maintenance. ‘The Denver and Rio Grande offer is similer to a recent proposal of the Colo- rado and Southern road, which decided | to abandon its South Park branch. The | Colcrado and Southern’s offer has been | accepted, and the line will be turned over to an operating concern s scon as | legal technicalities have been met. In both cases the railroads informed | the Interstate Commerce Commission | that the traffic over the branch lines | was insufficient to meet the cost of operation. The D. & R. G. W. yesterday told the commission it is losing $43,000 annually tthrough continued operation of the Southwestern branch, which serves mining territory exclusively, and that it would be necessary to expend $40,~ 000 for rehabilitation of the line.
