FINANCIAL. BONDS Received by Private Wire Direct to The Star Office. " BEST-GRADE BONDS REACH NEW HIGHS Utility and U. S.”Groups Re- flect Continuation of Strong Demand. Bpecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, December 9.—The dis- position among investors to limit their purchases to high-grade securities was | again reflecteg today in the strength of | United States Government bonds and | listed public utility issues. Among these | a number of new high prices of the | year were registered. The lack of any announcement as to | the method by which Great Britain ex- pects to meet the December 15 debt payment encourages the idea that pur- chases arc being made of the two is- sues of Treasury discount bonds, name- | 1y the 3%s and the 3s, the cne selling | about 2 points under par and the other at a discount of 312 points. Under the agreement such bonds may be turned in to the Treasury and be credited at their face value. The fourth Liberty 4Yys were also strong today and wiih- in % of their high of the year. A.T. & T. at Year’s Peak. Among the public utilities to show greatest strength were the issues of American Telephone & Telegraph. The 5%s and the 5s sold at the best prices of the year. Consolidated Gas 41=s, 58 and 5%s were also at spproximately their best. Duquesne Light 4145 were likewise stfong. There was considerable irregularity in the industrial group. Oil company bonds were strong. National Dairy Products 5)4s eased off to a new low for this movement. American Smelting & Refining 5s were again offered 1% Points under the recent sales price, while Dodge Bros. 6s touched 89. In the railroad list Baltimore & Ohio re- funding 5s advanced 2!2 points, with the 415s steady. Fractional gains oc- curred in issues of the Chicago, Mil- waukee & St. Paul; Chicago & North- western, Erie, Great Northern, Penn- sylvania and Frisco. French Issues Gain. French Government 7los continued | their advance, selling early as high as | 126. On the other hand, United King- | dom 5%s were soft. German govern-| ment loans gained slightly. Australian | and Argentine issues improved fraction- | ally. Columbia Mortgage Bank 6las and Ts were each up a point. The in- consistency of the market is exhibited in the relatively greater strength of UNITED STATES. (Sales are in $1,000.) igh. NEW YORK, December 9.—The Curb Exchange today finished at the best levels of the session. The advance which started at the beginning of the final hour erased the irregularity that marked dealings in the forenoon. Dealings not only increased, but the market broadened as prices advanced. | The market leader, Electric Bond & Share, rose more than a point. Con- solidated Gas of Baltimore was up about a point. American Gas & Electric net- |ted & couple of points in its forward| move. American & Foreign Power warrants firmed. Standard Oil of Indiana maintained its early rise, as did Mercantile Stores. As usual, late in the session, Novadel | Agene made a new high. Cities Service was little changed. Short covering aided the general market advance. Three factors accounted for the bet- tered feeling toward petroleum secur- ities, These were the cut in daily allow- able by the Texas Railroad Commission, the belief that price structures will be buttressed by some sort of understand- ing between various large frms; and the remarkable way, in view of the depres- sion, that domestic gasoline consump- tion has been maintained at this season. | Standard Oil of Ohio preferred, which | seldom appears on the tape, came out | today with an initial bulge of 11a| poin{s. National Casket preferred, a | rarity on the Curb tape, opened at 89, | up 5!; points and at a peak price for | the year. Parker Rustproof led the automotive accessories. Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea opened up a point despite its report on No- vember sales, which were down 15.8 r cent in dollars and 5.6 per cent. tonnage from a year ago. The fig- ures were $62,848,653, or off $2,964,258, and 98,819 tons or a decrease of 5.875 tons. Swift & Co. and other food issues inclined to heaviness. Lack of progress at the copper cur- tailment conference and the weak struc- ture of red metal prices dampened enthusiasm for these shares, though Newmont Mining was a shade higher in the forenoon Federated Metals declared a liquidat- ing dividend of $14 a share out of proceeds received from the sale of American Smelting & Refining bonds, which the corporation received on the sale of its assets to the smelting com- pany. After metal and metal product inventories are sold, a further liqui- dating payment will be made. Although most of fthe radio con- cerns are reporting dufl business at this season, Pilot Radio & Tube today’ told of a giin in November sales of 23.6 per cent over the same month a year ago, but the sheres reacted after the news was out. Among the regular dividend declarations today were those of Hol- linger Gold, discounted marketwise several sessions ago, and Graymur Corporation, which recently has been firm Chicago, Burlington & Quincy, one of the most inactive of curb rails, to- day reported November operations re- sulted in a profit after charges, though figures were smaller than the same month a year ago. (Copyright. 1032.) Foreign Markets By the Associated Press. ; LONDON.—Quiet conditions prevailed on the Stock Exchange, the ‘American debt note having little effect on prices. Gilt-edged securities and industrials maintained @ steady trend, but realiz- ing caused easiness in mining shares jand ofls, especially Anglo-Persian shares. The closing was dull PARIS.—Trading was dull on the Bourse today and prices were slightly Jower. Wall Street selling and other unfavorable advices caused & heavy closing. NEW YORK, December 9.—Four im- pertant commodity exchanges here, whose combined annual dealings exceed $1,000,000,000, plan to consolidate and wili submit such a proposition to their membership, it was announced today. The merger would include the Rubber Exchange of New York, National Raw | Silk Exchange, National Metal Ex- change and New York Hide Exchange, according to Jerome Lewine, president of the Silk Exchange and chairman of the joint committees of the respective exchanges. Commodity exchange consolidation been agitated here for five years, but only in the last year did such a movement take real form. Three of the exchanges have approved of the consolidation and the fourth will sub- mit the proposal to the board of gov- | ernors in a few days. “It is expected,” said Mr. Lewine, “that consolidation will broaden trad- ing in all of the commodities affected. | It will effect substantial economies and afford more advantageous trading facili- ties in a number of commodities on a single floor.” (Copyright, James E.
