Clara Bow at Fox Theater In “Call Her Savage.” F it were not Clara Bow who had enlisted in the enterprise, the neatly executed rounds of per- sonal violence and destruction of dining-room equipment in “Call Her Savage,” at the Fox Theater, might be viewed merely as large: scale developments of the original purpose of motion picture comedy. Passing beyond the custard-pie era to the more refined methods of destruc- tion, there is a "~ wide fleld in + which even an ordinary actor may attract at- tention with F such conduct, but. ¢ with the idea made much more complex through . the mixing of . psychology, her- . edity and well or- dered hostility an - Impressive series of scenes may be presented, espe- cially with Clara Bow, a ranking Hollywood star, as the performer. Miss Bow’s multitude of inquiring friends found more than the pleas- ure of observing a play in which restraint_in action had been ban- ished. They were interested in her new role, in which she becomes an unusual character, a distinctive per- son, & terrorizer and a figure of oc- casional passion in its simplest form. She produces a popular picture, displays a transformed Clara Bow personality, and yet has the same self-confidence which has been ob- served in the numerous pictures that have created her fame. With an ancestry that has been mixed with the aboriginal, the woman she represents is presumed to have inherited some of the out- standing traits, and when her fam- ily finds her incorrigible she is sent to a private schoal in Chicago, where she gains a wider field for the exercise of her unconventional emo- tions. She is briefly married after breaking up a dinner party, starts a riot on a slumming expedition, and after a kaleldoscopic career returns to the great Southwest to find the life that will bring less embarrass- ment to her friends. Monroe Owsley as & rather weak character shares with her the chief incidents of the play, with Gilbert Roland and Thelma Todd in impor- tant associate roles. Other actors of ability who share in the production are Estelle Taylor, Willard Robert- son, Weldon Heyburn, Arthur Hoyt, Jay Randall and Cyrus Randall. ‘While there is a large mixture of comedy, it is to be assumed that to the average theatergoer the experi- epces of this young woman of ab- original tendencies have a touch of mild tragedy. The stage performance at the Fox includes Bob Murphy, comedian, whose two children aid with clever musical hits, while the family re- sponds to requests from the audi- ence for songs; Alex Morrison, golf expert, in an unusual act; the Cali- fornia Collegians, grotesque instru- mentalists and singers; Lewis and Moore in popular comady, and the Wing Wah troupe of expert acyo- bats. _The orchestra selection, un- der Phil Lampkin, is “Southern Rhapsody.” D.C.C. Dressler and Moran Continue At Palace Another Week. THE comedy film, “Prosperity,” starring Marie Dressler and Polly Moran, ill be continued at the Pal- ace Theater for another week. These two pals of the movies have come to have a definite place in the minds of all those persons who enjoy the laughter that ccmes from odd situa- tions and the emphasis upon tradi- tional forms of wit and humor. Their appearance in any American city is an event, in that they have impressed their style upor the public mind. and their absence from the list of the season's attractions would leave & void. Large crowds have at- tended the showing of the picture in its first week, and the manage- ment has found it desirable to extend the tire. The Palace also offers the Met- rotone News, an entertaining film, with Zazu Pitts and Thelma Todd in “Soilers,” and Mickey Mouse in “wayward Canary.” o PROTESTS WHEAT DEAL Canton Opposes Nanking Plan to Buy $12,000,000 U. 8. M D024, Joe E. Brown at Earle In “You Said a Mouthful.” OE E. BROWN is prattling his amiable nonsense at the Earle this week in “You 8aid a Mouthful,” one of those mis- taken identity comedies of the 1915 vintage, which he manages to carry along amusingly enough. ‘The boy who, because of mistaken identity, has to impersonate a famous aviator, race driver, bronco buster or such is as common in films as ladies who smile too much. Joe, to be different, at least technically, is a salesman who bears the name of Joe Holt, a long- distance swim- mer. He is mis- taken for his aquatic name- sake, and, al- though he is horrified by the sight ot so much as a glass of water, is compelled to swim in a Catalina-to-California marathon. Mixed up in these simple pro- ceedings are unsinkable bathing suits, handsome rival swimmers and a little colored boy named Farina, who steals the show whenever he is around. Brown spreads his mouth all over the landscape, gives a com- ical aquaplane demonstration and supplies the best parody of the Eu- gene O'Neill “subconscious aside” yet invented. Ginger Rogers is the heroine, Preston Foster the swimming rival. On the stage the “Arkansaw Trav- elers,” Weaver Brothers and Elvira brought the house down into their laps for the better part of an hour, playing outlandish musical instru- ments of the hinterland and present- ing a series of well designed novel- ties. Although their good hill-billy music and comedy occasionally is marred by a jarring “vo-do-dee-o,” they rorl‘nd a uniformly warm resep- tion for"each of their stunts. Stickney and Aylin, a man-girl novelty song and dance team. add an acceptable act to the bill. Stick- ney performs a really unusual stilt dance. The vaudeville is introduced by two pleasing blonde young ladies whose names unfortunately are not to be found on my bill. They de- serve mention for their violin and dance number. R. B. P, Jn George O'Brien at Columbia In “The Golden West.” ESTERN drama which is some- thing more than a plot of vil- lainy and courage is offered at the Columbia_Theater in “The Golden West.” Sometimes a Zane Grey story rises to the point of furnishing dramatic material which is admir- ably adapted to the screen and some- times George O'Brien has a role which lends weight to his work. Both of these conditions have been realized in “The Golden West,” and in addition to the forceful drama presented, there are plenty of real- igtic battles with the Indians, and a fine representation of the stampede of a buffalo herd. The picture is notable for the scope of the scenes, combined with much detail and for the direction and photographic art. It opens in Kentucky, with a most pcituresque background, and, after a family feud has developed to the shooting stage, the plot is transferred to the West, where a transcontinental railroad is being built against the wishes of the Indians. Several decades of time are covered. Strands of family life are separated for a period of years, only to be brought together in a series of theatrical incidents, which have less of the obvious and more of the sparkle and ingenuity of a real work of fiction. Janet Chandler and Marion Burns have the leading feminine parts in the play and contribute to the excel- lence of the performance. Skillful riding is much in evidence. The cast includes _Arthur Pierson, Onslow Stevens, Emmett Corrigan, Bert Han- lon and Edmund Breese. ‘The Columbia also exhibits a Charlie Chaplin film reproduced from his earlier days, called “The Cure.” There is a synchronized ac- companiment and it serves to recall the old Chaplin, when pantomime did a great deal to emphasize his personal traits, with their comic in- spiration. The cartoon production, under the general group of “Flip the Frog,” is up to the customary stand- ard. The newsreel offers the fea- tures of the day’s events. D.C.C. MUSIC FRIDAY MORNING CLUB. 'ARIETY that appealed to the large audience which gathered for the Pleasure of an hour of good music was the keynote of the program given at the Priday Morning Music Club yester- day morning in Barker Hall. It was an opportunity to hear three well known musicians of Washington in & manner to show their versatility and the scope of their musical interests. The atmosphere was not too heavily Joe E. Brown. enjoyment, yet the highest standards were preserved, while being presented in the attractive form of pleasurgable entertainment. distancing her ability as a pianist by her talent as a composer, is steadily be- ing recognized beyond local boundaries as a representative of some of the best creative work the younger musicians are producing. This understanding of the inside reasons which influence the writ- ing of a compositicn was easily notice- able in her musicianly interpretations. She opened the program with a group of four compositions by Edward Mac- Dowell, which was arranged with a sensitive feel for the delicate mobility of the composer's temperament. For her second group she chose two con- trasting works of Franz Liszt, “Valse Oubliee” and “Tarentella From Venezia e Napoli.” In these she missed, to a certain degree, the unrestrained vigor of Liszt, of which there is also & hint in the quieter mood of the “Valse Oubliee.” The aucience, however, would gladly have heard more had she agreed to an encore. In the singing of Florence Sindell there is the freedom and naturalness of a bird, and the sweet quality of her soprano voice - carrles a charm that would never prove tiresome. Especially lovely ®was her singing of “Griserie de Roses,” by Ernest Moret, and Rach- maninoff’s “The Soldier’s Bride.” Evelyn Scott, violinist, was repeatedly recalled after her facile playing of “The Flight of the Bumble Bee,” by Rimsky- Korsakow, and Kreisler's “Schoen Ros- marin.” One feels that Miss Scott has not given out all that she has to give and that there are dormant possibilities very much worth while bringing into prominence. Her fine tone and real temperament could accomplish much. The true enjoyment which the audi- ence experienced in the entire program was expressed in generous applause. A E.
