FA_10 ® CAPE TOWN FLYER AHEAD OF SCHEDLE Amy Johnson Lands at Ben- guela and Takespff—72 Mours From London. mie ..WMMPrnL IQUELA, Portugese West Africa, ffavember 17.—Amy Johnson, the dar- ing British woman fiyer, who is trying to beat the record of her husband, J. A. Mpnllison, from London to Cape- town, landed here today well ahead of sghedule and took off for Mossamedes, 200 miles down the coast. When Miss Johnson set her trim menoplane down in this port town, she was only 72 hours out of London and hagbgut 1,500 miles to go. s she had at least 31 hours and 19 minutes left in which to tie Molli- #m's record of 4 days 17 hours and 19 minutes. Turnd®Back for Landing. #Miss Johnson passed Benguela at speed before dawn, but later re- eared and Janced at 7:10 a.m. rmen here said they considered Johnson well ahead of her sched- ule. They said she had an excellent cpance to beat the record because the mest difficult part of the journey was| behind her. The premier woman fiyer of Eng- lond hopped off early Monday from London for the 6,200-mile journey to Capetown. She landed at Oran, Al- a, and streaked out across the great ara just before midnight Monday. % Desert Crossing Success. “\Miss Johnson successfully crossed the dgsort Tuesday, alighting at Gao, on the upper Niger, in French West Africa, &t 12:10 pm. that day. She rested ugtil yesterday morning and took off for Duala, on the Gulf of Guinea. ‘Whether she stopped at Duala or at some other coast city was not known, but she probably did, because the dis tance from Gao to Benguela is abou 21800 miles, rather too far a distance for & Bingle hop. The London-to-Oran hop yas 1,100 miles, Oran to Gao 1,300, Gao to Duala 1400 and Duala to Benguela 1,200, leaving a single 1,500-mile stretch to Capetown. It was apparent that the success of her assault on the record depended on the condition of her plane and he? own ghysical stamina. W In three days she has traveled 4,700 . including 1,300 across the treach- C Sahara, MESSAGE, INDICATES TROUBLE. Miss Johnson Tells Husband of Forced Landing at Benguela.
