REAL ESTATE. ARGHITECTS HAIL START OF REVIVAL $572,738,000 Projects Al- ready Financed and Being Planned. Belief that the beginning of a period of recovery in the building industry of the country has been reached is held by editors of the American Archi- tect on the basis of a _survey of projects now planned and financed. Based on direct individual reports from 1636 representative architects and other informed sources, the sur- vey shows that building and mod- ernization projects now in the plan- ning stage and already financed amount to_$572.738.000. Contemplated construction, based on architects' Tecords and checked against business conditions in each State, reaches an additional figure of $1,181,- 068,000, the magazine reports. Construction Speeded. Of the total of the two classifica- tions, those already planned and those contemplated, it is reported that $299.- 623,000 is in the new building projects already financed and undcr planning for immediate construction. In the actual new building projects there are 1,145 dwellings costing below $20.000, making a total estimated cost of $10,171,500, and 203 dwellings cost- ing from $20,000 and up, costing a| total of $8,104,000. Of apartment buildings and hotels there are 128, representing a cost cf | $18155,500, and 24 hotels costing | $4.490,000. In 'the contemplated construction listed in the survey data there are 3,429 dwellings having an individual cost below $20,000 which have a total | estimated cost of $26,822,700, and 582 dwellings of more expensive classifica- | tion having a total cost of $21,677,500. Hubbard, It was built by H. H. Hubbard from plans by A. H. Sonnemann of the Kennedy-Chamberlin | Development Co. The residence of Richard C. Hub- bard, on Woodlawn avenue. at the in- tersection of Shadow road, in Kenwood, Md., is an interesting study of a modern home that reveals the architectural in- fluence of the early American manner. ‘There is seen in this house appealing effect of the low, somewhat rambling and broken roof line of a dwelling that is set snugly against the ground. It is given an added picturesque feeling, due to its location on a spacious and wood- ed lot, showing a broad expanse of sloping lawn in front of the building. Roof Is of Tile. The house is a combination of stone, white-painted brick and clapboard, and has a roof of tile of the type employed in the restoration of historic buildings at Williamsburg, Va., which gives the effect of old, moss-green, wood shingles of the early American homes. ‘The white-painted brickwork serves to lighten the aspect of the house and to provide contrast againsi the gray and light-brown tones of the stone and the green of the lawns and trees. An ornamental wrought-iron porch, with copper roof, lends s distinctive touch to the entrance. - Hearth of Marble. ‘The main entrance leads into a spa- cious hall, from which a stairway of early American style carries to the second floor. < ‘Through a deep arch at the left of the entrance hall and down two steps is a large living room, in one end of | which is a fireplace having a facing and hearth of marble and a wood man- tel extending to the ceiling. To the left of the fireplace is a deep-seated vindow in a paneled wall area, while a door in the paneling to the right of the fireplace Jeads to a sun room having a flagstone floor.
