FEARS EASED ON STEEL COMBINE Ottawa Pact Not Linked With Big Producers, It Is Indicated. By the Associated Press. OTTAWA, July 25.— Unofficial fig- ures revealed at the American legation here showed that the reported British- Canadian steel manufacturers’ agree- ment involved no so-called “big pro- ducers.” Dispatches to the Toronto Mall today said United States Steel experts feared $40,000,000 worth of American business would be diverted to the United King- dom under the agreement which was reached early in the week. Its condi- tions were not made public. It was understood unofficially that the only steel negotiations so_ far in- volved a scheme to influence Canadian use of British steel standards in con- struction. This necessarily would mean eventual demand for British patterns. As expressed so far, no doubt ap- parently exists in the minds of dele- gates here that some steel deal will be made during the imperial conference to the probable disadvantage of Ameri- can producers. How much of their loss would be made up by American branch plants in Can- ada and how much by British concerns would still have to be determined. Great Britain is seeking a Canadian market for her automobiles, but avail- able statistics offer little hope of suc- cess for this project st year Canadian plan bled 30,000 cars from A';ner:f-x:-.gne.de parts, and this country imported 8,000 automobiles from the United States over a tariff of 20 per cent ad valorem on cars selling under $1,200 in the United States and 40 per cent on the mtgle&expenslve makes, rvers advanced the ary that because of ocean xm.,m‘“éfiif‘,‘_ British-made automobiles would cost mrelln the Cln;xdlln market than erican, even if the British c: entered duty free T main competi owever, will be-the Canading mann: facturer, who in assembling American- made parts has the advantage of ex- pensive automotive research and im- provements, The question must awalt further Canadian proposals to the conference. It is significant, however, that Cana- dian tariff on American manufactures had enticed $500,000,000 in American investments to this side of the interna- tional line by the end of 1930. More than 100 major American branch plants have been established here in the last tWo years. LEGAL NOTICES. EDMOND L. JONES, Attorney.
