THO MEN FOUND " WITHFSH BLOOD Elliptical Blood Cells May Be { Throw-Back to Lower i Forms. BY THOMAS R. HENRY. Some men have fish blood. A strange human anomaly, which fmay be a throw-back over millions of | generations to the fishes and reptiles, is reported in the current issue of the medical bulletin of the Veterans’ Ad- ministration, Two cases of veterans treated at Government hospitals whose red blood cells, at least in part, were elliptical instead of circular in shape—an aston- ishing variation from the biological standpoint—are cited by Drs. M. C. Terry. E. W. Hollingsworth and Vin- cent” Eugenio of the Veterans' Admin- tstration staff. This is a condition, they point out, | which is almost entirely absent in the wiole race of mammals from the half- | reptile tralia to man himself. hand, tion among the lower vertebrates such as the fishes, amphibians and reptiles. The change in the shape of the red blood cells occurred somewhere in the process of transition from the lower to the higher verterbrates more than a hundred million years ago, but appar- ently a tiny strain of the reptile-like blood has persisted all through the line of evolutionary development that led to man. Otherwise this peculiar shape of the blood is found among mammals only among the camels and closely related animals. It is universal among the Jower vertebrates with a single excep- tion, a family of low marine fishes re- lated to the eels. The finding of this condition among their patients led the Veterams' Administration doctors to search the medical literature of the egg-laying platypus of Aus- On the other & AIVERTISENENT f RECEIVED HERE HRANEH orfl | quite widely distributed in it is the characteristic condi- | world for similar cases and they found that altgether 52 have been reported. Analysis of these cases shows a ten- dency for the anomaly to run in fam- ilies. It is passed on by either the father or the mother but may skip & generation. It is about equally com- mon in both sexes, in both white and colored, and among people belonging to any one of the four blood groups which have been found in the human race. An autopsy on one of the Veterans' Administration cases showed this pe- culiarity extending all through the body, down to the blood in the smallest capillaries. The theory had been ad- vanced that it might he characteristic oniy of the blood running close to the surface, the change in shape being due to some mechanical reason. The peculiarity, the physicians re- port, apparently has no pathological significance. The persons in whom it | has been found have been il of a wide | variety of diseases and the single au-| topsy showed no other physical peculli- arities other than what would have been produced by the disease in a nor- " mal person. The indications are Lhal\ the “fish blood” peculiarity may be | althy per- sons, but it would be discovered only upon a microscopic examination of the | biood. 1 The principal function of the red | cell, the report points out, is to trans- | port oxygen. For this purpose the common_disk-shaped cell of mammal blood, it is mathematically strated, is more efficient than the el- liptical cell of the lower vertebrates. Because of this it has been adopted through_countless generations by the | mammalian race while the less effi- cient elongated cell has been thrown into_the dis “One may guess.” says the report of the Vetera: Bureau investigators, that the elliptical human erythrocite is an atavistic form—structurally such from some early necessity such as a less constant plasma—while the usual disk in man and most of the higher vertebrates is a later development adapted to conditions in which such a degree of rigidity of form is no longer necessary or advantageous One sees a_somewhat similar adap- ation of cells and serum still in | progress and not yet completed in the blood of the new-born child—not in any changing structure of the red blood cell but in the shifting relative strength | of receptors in_cells and serum, neither of which is the development likely to be completé at birth.” WET ORGANIZATION PICKS CANDIDATES Party Lines Abolished to Vote . Only for Those Favor- ing Repeal. The Association Against the Prohibi- tion Amendment has not changed its policy cn political affiliations, Pierre S. du Pont, chairman of the associatio Executive Committee, declared in a for- mal statement issued here yesterd: “In general,” he said, expect to support candidates for office, regardless of party, who have declared themselves in favor of repeal of the eighteenth amendment. “The Democratic platform is clear- cut and supports the aims of the Asso- clation Against the Prohibition Amend- ment. Therefore, we should find in the Democratic party those candidates who will propcse and recommend repeal without qualification. “While the Republican platform does not meet our aims, it must be remem- bered that 40 per cent of the delegates to the Republican convention voted for submission of repeal. Therefore, We should also find in the Republican party candidates who will likewise propose and“rmmmnd repeal without quali- cation.” CHURCH PLANS TRIDUUM A triduum to St. Anne will take place in St. Aloysius’® Church, North Capitol and I streets, beginning tomorrow morning with mass at 7 am.
