SPORTS. D.C.ProsAreReady LARKIN AND CLARK RATED DANGEROUS Conceded Chance to Go Far in National Tournament Next Week. BY W. R. McCALLUM. ASHINGTON will send to | the national open cham- plonship next week a| fine pair of professlonall golfers from the younger school, lads who have performed so well | around the Capital that they may go far in the national title chase if the game they have dlsplayed‘ during the past two months holds | up in the heat of a national tourney. In all, five Washington professional golfers will mbake the trip to the Fresh Meadow Club of Flushing, Long Island, to play in the national title event next week, but two of them are distinctly of | the younger group. It is around these | two “youngsters, who have come fast over the past two or three years, that much of the drama of the open may center. | They are Gene Larkin, the 25-year- | old assistant to Bob Barnett at the Chevy Chase Club, and Archie Clark, | the 23-year-old assistant to Sandy Ar- mour at Congressional. Both are fine | golfers and both are capable of phe- | nomenal bursts of speed over any man’s golf course. Others Comparative Veterans. ‘The other three qualifiers from Wash- ington are all men who are past their twentles in golf and all of them pre- viously have qualified in and played in national open championships. Larkin also has qualified previously, but for Clark his appearance next week at Fresh Meadow will mark his debut in a national championship. Bob Barnett of Chevy Chase, Al Houghton of Kenwood and Mel Shorey of East Potomac Park comprise the | trio, all of whom previously have quali- | fled for the naticnal. Although none of | these three is a doddering old gent in | the twilight of his golfing years, they are not the comparative youngsters in | the game that are Larkin and Clark. And it has become the habit in recent years in golf to expect unusual things Ceurse for Open Full of Pitfalls JUSHING, N. Y., June 15 (®.— Some of the Nation's leading professionals are getting first- hand knowledge these days of the pitfalls of the Fresh Meadow Coun- iry Club course, where the national open golf championship will be played next week. Only Leo Diegel has managed to fracture par of 70 so far this year. Leo toured the tricky layout in 69 yesterda carding birdies at the short ninth, short twelfth and the eighteenth. Until Diegel's round, Henry Ciuci’s 71 stood as the best score over the course this season. Wifly Cox was around in 74 and Al Ciuci in 73. Charley Guest found plenty of trou- ble in a round of 77. Ed Dudley also covered the course, but spent his time practicing shots and turned in no score. Golf Analyzed BY JOE GLASS HIS need of “feel” in playing the mashie is so essential there can't be too much consideration of it A vital factor in “feel” is the ‘manner in which the club is gripped. ‘The most approved grip is the over- lapping. It puts possession of the club in the fingers and thumbs, where feeling is most highly or- ganized, and where flexibility is greatest. As you know, in the over- lapping grip the joint of the little finger of the right hand fits over the middle joint of the first finger of the left hand. Avoid a palm grip, which destroys both “feel” and flexibility. And if OVERLAPPING GRIP IS \_ BEST FOR MASHIE THUMS DOWN SHAFT IF YoU HAVE TRousLE GETTING FINGER. of the younger generation. Tuning up for the national cham- plonship, both Larkin and Clark have put on notable scoring streaks over the gzsn week. Clark played the last nine les at Congressional the other day in 31 strokes, with a row of six consecutive birdies, from the twelfth hole through the eighteenth, for the boys to shoot at. Larkin played his home course at Chevy Chase in 69 strokes, exactly par. over a course where par admittedly is the toughest around Washington to obtain. Both thees smooth-cheeked youngsters have the habit of tightening up their game when the going“s tough- est, and on this account both may do well in the title test at Fresh Meadow. No Runaway Expected. Of course, if another Sarazen comes along to outpace the field as the little | Italian-American did so conclusively at | Sandwich last week, no one will be able | to nose him out, but such things usually | are not done in the American open. There’s always some one good enough to keep on level terms with the pacemaker, as the experience of recent open cham- pionships, with their many ties, has proven. A few years back Gene Larkin won the Maryland open championship, chiefly because on one of the one-shot holes at Elkridge, he put his first bail out of bounds beyond the green and | then, taking the stroke and distance penalty, he hit his next ball into the cup for an actual ace and a par 3. e | ‘won the title by a single stroke. ur\m has played the Chevy Chase course many times in better than par. His| record mark is 65. Last September Archie Clark finished second in the Maryland open at Con- gressional, one stroks behind Ralph | Beach, the winner. He has played the par 72 Congressional course several times in better than 70. Both these lads are capable of sustained bursts of speed. and while they are youngsters and the tourney is the national open, | where even the best of them frequently xo Wwrong, either or both may be up there ghting for the title when the payoff | comes a week from next Saturday. NLY two Washington golfers are playing today in the first round of the Gibson Island tournament for women. Mrs. Betty P. Meckley, the former District champion from Indian Spring, who qualified with an 87, met Mrs. F. G. Dempwoif of York, Pa., and Mrs. J. F. Gross of Indian Spring, who scored 99, met Mrs. W. B. Hurst of Elkridge, conqueror two weeks ago of Mrs. J. Marvin Haynes. Meanwhile today a women's team from Washingion clashed with a team of fair stars from Richmond over the James River course of the Country Club of Virginia. This is the same course over which the Middle Atlantic women's title tourney may be held merf in the year. OMEN go](ers started their munici- | pal championship match - play rounds vesterday with only two contests played in the tourney at Rock Creek Park. In the first flight Mrs. J. M. Jester defeated Mrs. D. M. McPherson and in | the seccnd flight Miss Nina Owings trounced Mrs. C. E. Gibson by 3 and 2. | ‘The balance of the matches are sched- | uled for completion this week. ‘ HARLIE PENNA, the Congressional | caddiemaster. is gathering to him- self quite a reputaticn as a lengthy hitter from the tze. Recently Charlie has accomplished a pair of notab'e stunts by driving onto the fourth and #ixth greens at the C-ngressional course. Both holes are normal drive and pitch holes. and both have been driven before. | but Charlie really is knocking the ball| a long distance from the tee. Only the | other dav he played the par 5 fifth hole at Congressional with a drive and & mashie shot to ghe him a puzt fcra3 NET SEM! FINAL LISTED | Mrs. Martinez and Mrs. Stone Due to Meet in League Event. ; Mrs. Ruth Martinez and Mrs. Frances Stone were to face this evening at 4 oclock in a semi-final match in the Women's District Tennis League tourney on the Columbia County Club courts. ‘The winner will enter the final round against Prances Walker, who yesterday defeated Mrs. Dorette Miller, 6—4, 6—2. in a match played on a private court. The Columbia courts were too ‘wet for use. Doubles matches also were carded today. before and after the Martinez- Stone tilt. On taking the handle of the shaft in your left hand, place the left thumb on it. ILMINGTON, Del, June 15.—Two first-ten stars, a_ Brazilian Davis cup player, a New York dark horse and four front rank collegians are among the 15 contestants who re- main in the running today for the Delaware State tennis championship. Dr. Eugene McCauliff, the Yonkers, N. v, flash who is conceded a- good chance to win the title, was the first to reach the quarter finals, while the 14 others had fought their way to the fourth round. Clifford Sutter of New Orleans and Berkeley Bell, a former Texan, the two seasoned top ranking stars, loomed as the favorites, but they faced stern opposition from Ricardo Pernambuco, the sole survivor of six Brazilians who found the going on the grass courts extremely fast: Karl Kamrath of the University of Texas, and Willilam Bas- com of Yale. The galleries, too. were interested in the work of David Jones, Columbia University representative, who yester- day upset Jake Hess, Southwestern in- tercollegiate champion, and Elliott Loughlin, captain-elect of Navy, who battered out a straight-set victory over the highly rated Jack Tidball of the University of California at Los Angeles. Two Washingtonians were eliminated yesterday when Pat Deck bowed to Berkeley Bell of Texas and Fred Sendel to Alex Keiles of Baltimore. Bell won, 6—1, 6—1, and Keiles triumphed 5—7, FISHING By Ed Deckermm— First Ald in the Woods. HE first-aid hints in this column are designed to aid the sufferer in the woods until the doctor comes. Should the occasion arise where a bandage is needed, don't bind up a wound with “any old rag.” In- fection from such a bandage is easi- ly contracted and its results often :xtremely dangerous and far-reach- ng. At the same time permit an ordinary table fork to remain in boiling water the same length of time. ‘Without permitting anything ex- cept the sterile fork to touch the handkerchief or cloth, pick it up with the fork and dip it in a solu- tion made of two quarts of toilet water and one bichloride of mercury tablet.
