“TALXIE" ADOPTED -FOR EDUCATION Chicago University to Use Method of Instruotion and Preserving Science. By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, May 16.—The University of Chicago is going “talkie.” It will not be an attempt to “jazz | up” education, or to go into the enter- tainment business, but will be as ex- periment in the use of talking pictures | as part of the university’s educational rogram. Within two weeks the university will start the production of a series of 20 films on the physical sciences, which will be made the basis of study in the freshman class begininng next Fall. | They also will be sold to other edu- cational institutions. Ducflbinx the invovation as part of the “experimental tradition” of the school, President Robert Maynard Hutchins, 33-year-old head of the in- stitution, sald it would be the first ed attempt of any university | to find out what talking pictures can | contribute to classroom Work. | “We expect to extend it to all branches of the university, to our courses in adult education snd to many of the 2,200 other institutions which use our new system of instruction.” he said. It took four years to per- fect the plan. ‘The death of sclentists in the past has prevented the world from hearing them describe their experiments, but under the new plan their spoken word will go on. | Phenomena which the naked eye cannot see will be shown. The pic- tures will depict the heartbeat of a dog. The excavations of Neneveh and H.nddu, the history of transportation, the life of a plant, and other vnnuen of the scientific world. Thefts in London average less than 6,000 8 year. Only a very small fraction of the t! vu remain uncaught, although England's police go about their work unarmed. Envelopes of House Dry Used to Mail Speech Made by Wet When “a heart-to-heart talk” with his constituents, sent through the malls by Repre- sentative Abernethy of North Carolina, ardent dry, turned out to be a blistering attack on pro- mbmon by Representative Britten f Illinols, the House of Repre- untauvll Post Office had some explaining to do. The explanation, forthcoming today, together with apologies to all concerned, is that a quantity of Abernethy envelopes, ad to his constituents, waiting in the Post Office to be stuffed with coples of an_Abernethy speech upholding prohibition, were filled by mistake with copies of & speech by Britten denouncing prohibition. The House Post Offize issued a formal statement that the incident was accidental. MOTION PICTURE TAX ‘ IS HIT BY SHORTRIDGE| By the Assoclated Press A plea against the proposed ldmls- sion tax on motion picture theaters charging 10 cents or more was made ln a statement today by Senator Short- | ridge, Republican, California, on e | ground that the burden would fell chiefly on the very poor. This tax is called for in the revenue bill now under consideration by the! Senate. Shortridge said the tax would close at least 5,000 more of the smaller theaters and would ‘“cause justifiable 1ll-will against our Government™ by de- priving poor and unemployed persons of needed relaxation. He asked that the Senate agree at | least with the Fouse, which set the tax on admissions of 46 cents and over. o Lions Eseape in France.
