Ine. _toa LE FOND APPEAL T0BE DETERMINED | Missionary, Philanthropic and Educational Emergency Before Conference. By the Associated Press. ATLANTIC CITY, N. J, May 6— | Methodist Episcopal delegates today ‘! faced the task of deciding whether the | first message from their general con- ference to the church at large would be | an appeal for $1,000,000 to support the | financially harassed missionary, phil- anthropic and educational program of | the denomination. The committee on | the state of the church has already ap- proved the appeal. Some criticism was voiced of the emergency message Wwhich calls upon | all Methodist pastors and their congre- | gations to start the $1,000,000 drive on | May 15 and to secure 200,000 “units” | of §5 each in the two weeks before May 31, when the campaign is to end. Dr. Frank Kingdon of East Orange, | N. J. was one of several committee | members to express the opinion that | the appeal would be “futile.” | During the discussion, Joseph J. Shya, a Chillicothe, Mo., attorney, re- ferring to all the financial problems of the church, suggested that Methodism organize its own financial institutions to handle the security obligations and loans of its departments. Mearwhile the attention of midwest- ern delegates has been focused on the Committee on Boundaries, whose sub- | committee has authorized a consolida- tion proposal for the fusion of the Chicago Northwest conference with the Rock River, Wisconsin, Iowa, Upper Iowa, Minnesota, Detroit, Northwest Towa, Illinols and West Wisconsin con- ferences. A five-point program, designed for | immediate application to current eco- nomic conditions, was approved yes- terday by & joint meeting of the Committees on Industrial and Social Relations. Approval of the program marked the first definite action on the board of bishops’ declaration for im- mediate and drastic reorganization of the relations between capital and labor.
