The| Am Beet Sug 6s'35. 1 heavy oversubscription to the one and two year Treasury notes and certificates and better March returns by some of the carriers were the factors influencing the advances, The entire Government list showed moderate gains. While there was not the activity nor the. broad fluctuations that occurred a short time ago when top prices of the year were made, it was evident that buying for the ac- count of the Federal Reserve system and for member banks, as well as by individuals, was proceeding at a brisk pace. Gains were largest in the long- term Treasury issues still selling at the greatest discounts from par. It is ex- pected that the allotments of the new ‘Treasury notes will be small and even less satisfactory than those made for the March offering. Among the lower priced rails Illinois Central 4%s advanced a point on the March report of the road showing it covered its fixed charges. On the other hand, Frisco 4s and 4!2s were heavy. Baltimore & Ohio first 4s declined over a point, while the junior issues of the road were higher. Northern Pacific 4s and Union Pacific 4s moved ahead. Chicago Great Western 4s sold below 40 again and then rallied. Alleghany Corporation 5s eased. New York traction bonds followed the recurring rumors of an agreement on franchise and fare conditions. Inter- borough Rapid Transit 7s, which are due in a few months, rose 1}, points, while the refunding 5s were up a point. Scattered throughout the general list were fractional changes, but with volume so small as to have no signifi- cance and reflecting no definite trend. The foreign list also was dull. The German _group exhibited the uncer- tainty of holders of these bonds as to the future political control in Ger- many. While the government issues ‘were heavy, the largest losses were in corporation’ bonds. At the same time there was a moderate reaction in French government issues, although this apparently was due to the com- petition of recent buying for French account. This had raised the price of the government 7%s about 12 points from the low of the year and the gov- ernment 7s about 9 points. Kreuger & Toll 5s advanced another point. When the Kreuger suicide oc- curred the general recommendation was to sell these bonds, but hold the bonds of International Match. Because of their default on May 1 the latter have dropped to a market value of $20 per $1,000 bond, while the Kreuger & Toll 55 are selling at the equivalent of nearly $150 per $1,000 bond and in- terest is still accruing on them. Regional Sales Agency. By the Assoclated Press. It is expected the De] ent of Justice will institute suit shortly to test the legality of the regional sales agency set up in the coal industry. Excellent progress has been made, it s understood, with respect to collection of data requested of Appalachian Coals, Inc., by the department, and trial of the case in a District Court is looked for by the National Coal Association in late Summer. Officers of the corpora- tion are hopeful the United States Su- preme Court will hand down a decision within the year. A \'nlumeyol information was turned over to the Department of Justice last week in answer to a questionnaire re- cently addressed to Ap) n offi- cials and the attorneys for the agency, who are Col. Dressed Fowl Steadier, However. Prices of farm products have shown a rather weak trend since the middle of April, says the United States De- partment of Agriculture, Bureau of Agricultural Economics, Market News Service. But firmness, or, at least, steadiness, appeared in some lines, like potatoes, butter, eggs and dressed fowl, all important sources of cash income to many farmers at this time of year. The loss of a large part of the month's previous rise in the wheat market was in response to better crop news and larger supplies at hand. Mill feeds and hay average a little higher, compared with mid-April prices. Live stock and meats met slow demand and there were lower prices quoted on calves, lambs and hogs. Butter Price Sustained. Prices of butter were fairly well sus- tained after the middle of April fol- lowing the weak and unsettled cond! tions the first half of the month. Buyers were operating a little more freely and receivers effected a close clearance of daily arrivals. Speculative buyers were conspicuous by their ab- sence and no great confidence was ex- pressed at the present price levels. In 5o far as the supply and demand angle is concerned, the market appears to be in & normal healthy condition, but {outside factors, such as condition of stock and grain markets and general industrial conditions, have a decidedly unsettling effect. Price of standard grade at New York has averaged close to 20 cents during April. Most points report increased arrivals from the South and Southwestern States, with much of this butter showing the ef- fects of the early pasture feed in the color as well as in the flavor. Presh cheese prices, in the principal centers of distribution, dropped Yz to 3% cent following the lower replace- ment costs in producing sections. Net decline since the first of the month is about 1 cent. At the new price level the tone was steady. While the lower prices resulted in some increases in the demand in a few quarters, trading in general was confined to actual needs. Fine quality cured and held cheese con- tinues full steady to firm. The net out-of-storage movement of cheese in the 26 markets during the first half of April was about equal to that of a year ago. Cheese prices in foreign markets were practically unchanged. Potato Market Irregular. City prices of Florida potatoes were higher, but Texas potatoes were some- what ‘weaker, Green Mountains ad- vanced at shipping points in Northern Maine to & range of 60 to 65 cents per 100 pounds, but other leading districts for old potatoes reported a steady mar- ki et. ’ Cabbage markets were considerably higher. Practically all onions sold lower except for a firm market on Mid- western and Far Western yellow varie- ties and on imports from Chile. Florida and Mexican tomatoes were higher. ‘The active shipping season for Arizona lettuce closed and cash track values were higher there. ‘With Louisiana strawberry movement active, the average of f o.b. auction prices’ dropped to $1.60 per 24-pint crate. Apples were slightly stronger at Western New York points, the bushel tubs og best Baldwins returning $1.10 to $1.15. The egg markets remained steady and unchanged in late April, having shown little variation through the month. Wholesale prices at New York for re- handled receipts, mixed colors, held at 1312 to 14 cents. JAPANESE INTERESTED IN CREDIT AID PLANS By the Assoclated Press. A cable to the Commerce Department says Japanese financial and govern- mental authorities are studying the plan of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation of this country with the view to copying this legislation to re- lieve their own banks of land loans. Both security and commodity prices are continuing downward in Japan, the cable said, with the former moving to- ward the pre-gold embargo period.
