FINANCIAL, THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON, D. (., WEDNESDAY, APRIL 20, 1933. HIGH YIELDS NOTED OND. . EXCHANE Several Issucs Listed on Local Market Are Re- turning Big Interest. BY EDWARD C. STONE. A glance at the securities listed on the Washington Stock Exchange re- veals some unusually high yields, al- though ft should be borne in mind that high yields do not always indicate the real value of a stock. At present the highest vield on the Washington Ex- | ehange is obtained on Carpel Corpora- | tion stock, which is returning 22 per | eent. The present dividend rate is §2 & year and the last sale was made at 9. Real Estate Mortgage & Guaranty | preferred, paying 60 cents a year and seliing at 4!, is yielding 14 per cent. | Capital Traction, selling around 13, is Yyielding better than 13 per cent, while two local utility bonds are yielding 12 per cent, Anacostia & Potomac Railroad first 55 and City & Suburban Railroad first 5. Capital Traction first 5s return 9.7 per cent st recent prices at 61 ‘Washington Gas Light 6s, series A, ate elding better than 6 per cent Norfolk & Washington Steamboat Co. stock is vielding 8.8 per cent at present quotations. Federal Storage preferred yields 10 per cent. Mergenthaler Lino- type over 8 per cent, Merchants' Trans- fer & Storage preferred 9 per cent. and | Lanston Monotype 9.2 per cent. Peoples Drug Stores preferred now returns 7 per_cent. while Woodward & Lothrop preferred pays the investor 6.5 per cent In the unlisted section, Chapin-Sacks preferred returns 7.8 per cent 1 The Potomac Power preferred issues are both yielding well over 5 per ceni d Washington Railway & Electric eferred returns 5.5 per cent. These ues, selected at random. do not in- clude any of the local bank stocks which are paying regular dividends on & lib- eral basis. Banks Earning Their Dividends. Washington owners of New York bank stocks are greatly interested in the first-quarter reports from some of the leading financial institutions in Gotham. It is learned that many banks in New York more than covered their devidend requirements in the face of the high percentage of liquid re- sources, which necessarily mean lower earning power. Some institutions re- port an increase over the same quarter in 1931. Selected at random, some of the earnings, with dividends paid for the quarter, follow: | { Earnings Dividend | Per shr. Per shr. | 71 s National Ci Corn_Exchange Chemical Bank & Trust Continental Trust Empire Trust Guaranty Trust Trving Trust *Manufacturers New York Trust Public National Merged with Chatham Phenix on" Feb- ruary 9. 1932 Earnings of 46 cents per share are only for the seven weeks from that date to March 28, 1932. Increases over 1931 were shown by Bankers' Trust, Corn Exchange, Em- pire Trust, Irving Trust and Manufac- turers’ Trust. Coast Line Adds Director. All officers were re-elected and Roland L. Redmond, New York lawyer, was added to the board of directors at the nnual meeting of stockholders of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Co., yes- terday at Richmond The new board of directors reelected all officers with Lyman Delano, who succeeded the late Henry Walter as chairman of the board, retaining that pasition. The reports of the president and di- Tectors showed that gperating revenues for 1931 were $54,088,004.97, a decrease from 1930 of $8,931.951.91, or 14.17 per cent, and were less than in any year since 1917. Operating expenses for 1931 aggre- gated $43,188,470.55, a decrgase of $6.- 496,989 46, or 13.08 per cent from 1930, being lower than in any year since 1918. . Phone Stock in Limelight. It was stated recently that there are 10,000 holders of American Telephone & Telegraph in- Washington, and that no doubt explains why so wide interest is being taken in the stock right now. I opened on the New York Stock Ex- change today at 99, again selling under par. At its low of 97% yesterday, Ameri- can Telephone was selling lower than it had been at any time since 1921, when it touched 953;. In 1914, when the Stock Exchange was closed, the low- est price officially recorded was 114; in the 1907 panic. it sold as low as 88 and in the 1901 market smash it touched 151. At the moment, there are some 665.- 000 shareholders, giving the company the largest stockholders’ list in the wotld. Evidencing the public’s confi- dence in the shares, holders of more than 1,000 shares sold 200,000 shares in 1931, while holders of fewer than 1.000 &hares absorbed 677.000 shares, includ- ing part of the latest offering. In the first three months of 1932, says the Wall Street Journal, sales by holders of 1,000 or more shares aggré- gated some 180,000 shares, which were Teadily absorbed by holders of fewer shares, largely by holders of fewer than 100 shares. Both foreign and employes' takings have increased to record pro- portions in the last six months. Daylight Saving Next Week. Washington brokers and the mem- bers of their staffs will have to arise with the birds next week, as daylight savings time goes into effect on the New York Stock Exchange. All the big markets will open at 9 o'clock instead of 10 and close at 2 instead of 3 o'clock. Notices have already been posted in the local board rooms call- ing attention to the’new schedule. The investment houses in this city also con- form to the earlier hours as their ticker service is also advanced one hour. The Summer plan is always popular here, Mergenthaler Much Stronger. Mergenthaler Linotype was the most | active stock on the Washington Ex- change today, showing great improve- ment. The stock opened with 30 shares selling at 35. Ten shares then sold at 37 and five more at 37%. Fifty shares then sold at 38, 52 more at 39 and 10 more closed the day's trading with & jump to 41. The market closed with 42 bid and 45 asked, the day's sales reaching 157 shares The other type stock. Lanston Mono- type. was also out, three sales involving 40 shares taking place at 58. The only other stock traded in was Carpel Cor- poration. 25 shares selling at 9. a jump | of 2 full points from the last recent | sale at 7 Bond trading was confined to Wash. ington Gas Light issues. $1.000 Wash. ington Gas 5s selling at 100 and $200 ! ‘Washington Gas 6s, series B, moving at 1003, ‘The board of governors of the Wash- ington Stock Exchange today estab- lished minimum prices on the miscel- laneous stocks listed on the local ex- change. All public utility stocks and all bonds still are open to free trading. The National Credit Caqrporation, formed last Fall to extend emergency aid to banks, announces that on April 22 it will redeem another 10 per cent of its outstanding gold notes. The pay- ment will amount to about $45.000,000. Two previous redemptions, totaling 30 per cent of the capital, have been made. ‘The Seaat= Banking and Currency Committee hes reported favorably upon th= Norbeck bill, S. 2409, which would | make the debentures of the Federal | Intermediate Credit Banks eligible col- lateral for members of the Federal Re- serve System to use in borrowingz from the Pederal Reserve Banks. The twin bill. introduced by Representative Steagall, has been reported favorably from the House Banking and Eurmwy Trust ... ~Prev 1932~ High. Kl 98 60 FINANCIAL. Special Dispateh to The Star. NEW YORK. April 20—True to its nt form, today's stock market was ire of liquidation In industri | that used to be called pivotal and of stubborn resistance to pressure by the rails, There was the usual list of new lows, igcluding such prominent victims as Unfled States Steel common and preferred, Ameri Telephone and American Can, but all through the weakness elsewhere the carrier stocks were conspicuously firm. There was nothing especially un- favorable in the news. Electric output was off agi on the week compared with a year ago, but the rate of de- cline was lower than last week. Among the features of the last hour were the selling of the Bush Terminal issues and buying in Woolworth. The opening was nigher and the over! it orders gave the impression that some outside buying, long lacking, was coming into the market. The rails made the best showing, as they did yes- terday. For this the reason assigned slightly on the week, ry much under the re- ago, did reveal an in- scellaneous merchandise an-carload freight. The fall- in coal traffic on was the leader, with Chesa- Ohio a close second so far as was concerned. The former ran up 2 to 3 points. Union Pacific on & smaller turnover was up over 3 points. This mild demonstration in the rails crease of and less-t pply and both made ows for the bear market. So did ion. General Electric sold a share for the first time, but ter resistance than yesterday.
