WALLTAM ¥ BENBOK, "HOTEL DENNIS THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, FLOWERS INPARKS IN EARLY BLOOM Mild, Season Brings Out Dis- play Several Weeks Ahead of Schedule. The Spring flowering show being put on in the parks of the National Capital | has started a couple of weeks earlier than usual, due to the mild season. Officials of the Park Division of the | Office of Public Buildings and Public Parks, said today that the early bulbs— snow drops and scillas—are in bloom ! Scattered flowers on the forsythia are the vanguard of the bursting buds of yellow. Crocus in Bloom. Various species of crocus are coming into bloom in the various flower beds. along the Speedway and between the Navy and Munitions Buildings. Some pansy plants have been in blossom for several weeks, but the full flowering display has not yet arrived. The Winter jasmine has been showing its yellowish blooms for some time. Magnolias are now reaching full bloom, but these are mostly the decidu- ous variety. One tree is in full bloom at the Capitol. The reddish flowers of the Japanese quince have been out for about six weeks now, but the zenith of their bloom has yet to be reached These flowers are seen In the White House grounds, in those of the Smith- sonian Institution, and In the vicinity of Hains Point Other bulbs are peeping through the ground, and in this class Fall hyacinths, Jonquils and daffodils, but these are without color now. The spirea is start- ing to show some color at this time, of- ficials said. Cherry Blossoms Uncertain. The officials declined to be drawn into a prediction as to when the Japa- nese cherry trees will be in bloom, re- calling with sorrow last year's experi- ence. One woman came here from Florida and waited In an expensive hotel suite for several days, and when the trees from Tokio still failed to hang out their Oriental blooms, she took the officials of the Office of Public Buildings and Public Parks personally to task for the non-appearance of the flowers. So, this year there will be no prediction as to when the cherry trees wfil bloom, the officials pleading that 1t depends en- tirely upon the weather, and one man's guess is as good as anotner’s. They can say, however, that now the buds have not begun to burst. HAGERSTOWN HOST OF D. C.
