Special Dispatch to The Star. BOSTON, February 13 (N.AN.A) —Tt is always true that the very best stories come walking on their hind legs into newspaper offices. Sometimes they come right in and enact their dramas in the city room; at other times they come in and relate strange experiences. The latest story to arrive in this man- ner is that of a master of arts who has had a narrow escape from the head- hunters of Northern Luzon—and brought back photographs of the head-hunters to prove it. He is Arthur Llewellyn Griffiths, Yale master of arts—Yale, A. B, 1901; A. M, 1905, under Prof. William Lyon Phelps. After graduaticn Mr. Griffiths an- sewered Gov. Gen. Willlam H. Taft's call for three Yale men to be sent to him in the Philippines to begin the work of establishing schools. In Manila they asked him where he wanted to be sent. ‘Wherever it's the wildest,” said he, in the true Yale spirit, “and where I can do the most good.” ‘What that got him! Pacification Not Complete. They picked out a place near the northern end of Luzon, where the Abra River flows westward into the China Sea, with Vigan near its mouth. And from this place in his narrative forward it should be remembered that the “pacification” of the islands was not even yet completed. The new teacher was rafted up the river to a village named Bucay, halfwa; between the sea and the mountain anl a 1ong way from either. It was the last Hllplnu town in the province and a g:z ds Jjourney beyond the capital. Ban- A mile and a half upstream, the mountains, lay the fres of the Vil lages of the Tinguianes—to hear him say it, “the first of the Tin Can villages.” There were a lot more of them before you got to the foothills of the range, blue in the distance. And the Tin- guianes were pagan. One day there came along an expedi- tion sent by the American government of the islands with orders to search out and visit a reputed settlement of head- hunters up on the mountain top. No white man had ever got in as fa; their settlements, 5 aE ..These mountain tribes are called ‘Kalingas,” which means “war men” When a Kalinga has killed an enemy— or, for that matter, a friend—he cuts the head off and boils it in a pot full of palm wine or other native drink. When it is completely boiled, the sku'l is hung on the house front as an orna- ment and trophy; the soup is drunk, the idea being that by consuming it the drinker will absorb the strength and brains of the victim. Contracts Dengue. Griffiths joined the expedition and a few days out contracted a fine attack | of dengue, which is bone-break fever, generally fatal. Griffiths didn't much know what he was doing for the next few days. They came to a little vil- lage of a dozen huts. Tue, at the very base of the mountains, and the huts were in the air, Mr. Griffiths explained that the Kalingas have a neat trick of slipping up in the night and spearing upward through hut floors. So the hut dwellers, the Tinguianes, climb up on the mantelpiece to sleep, 50 to speak. The inhabitants fled as the 16 white men arrived, whereupon the expedition moved in, Mr. Griffiths taking the end hut. He had gone to sleep, when an uproar broke out in the village; shouts and shots, and before he had time to get out, a bunch of naked savages waltzed in on him and tied him up, hands and feet. They lowered him to the ground, and then slung him on a pole, exactly as they would carry a trussed pig. A trussed pig. in great pain from dengue and from the pull on his bonds, gets little enjoyment of the scenery. He didn't even get much satisfaction out of the knowledge that his companions had beaten off the attack of the Kal- ingas. All he knew was that they had got him. ‘The returning warriors were met at the village by shouting and dancing women. They carried their pig to the at the door, pole, thongs and all. Counts Bleached Skulls. He could see as he lay the stones and ashes of previous fires, tight opposite his hut. Down one side of the street he could count the bleached skulls along the house fronts. And he had an idea. All day long he was left there.- As the darkness came. the tom-toms started up, and people began to arrive from out of town. A kettle was brought to the fireplace opposite the hut, and a cheerful blaze started up under- neath it. While the water was heating, the Kilangas and their Kilangesses began a tribal dance which seemed to be part of the recipe for head-boiling. Mr. Griffiths, feeling more than ever like soupstock, had passed through so many stages of pain and fright that he had actually become calloused and was able to reflect that though it might be painful it wouldn't be long. And then, at the very last possible minute, when the palm wine was al- ready sending up its steam, when the dance was about at its finish, there was a most welcome sound of shots. The Kalingas didn't vell: they ran mighty silent and disappeared entirely, outside the village. In 5 minutes more, he was rescued, and became the first white man who ever got into a head- hunter’s village with any prospect of getting out again alive, and the nearest white man to a soup-pot that didn’t get in. Friends Bring Pony. His friends had brought his whole kit and his pony. They had missed him and started not more than an hour after his departure. The trail had been perfectly easy to follow. The expedition had an interpreter aleng and he made shift to talk with the Kalingas next morning, &nd to make them understand that the ex- pedition was friendly. So the white men stayed, and the Kalingas came back to town and no reference was made to the awkward matter of boil- ing a friend’s head or shooting two or three hosts. The photographer of the expedition pictured some of the more beautiful head hunters, and the chief, who was chief because he held the head record—44 skulls—of the vil- age, undertook, when Mr. Griffiths was too sick to stay any longer, to furnish WHERE TO DINE.
