DULUTH, Minn., February 9.—Skiing 1s ranked as a leading Winter sport in most sections of the United States, but Norway, where it is the na'ional pas- time, claims as its native so-4 the three outstanding riders in Amer&a, selected on this country’s Olympic t-Sm. Of the six men selectsd for the Olympic ski team, three are natives of Norway, one was born in Sweden and two are American born. Of the 17 candidates for the team only seven were foreign born, and of this number four | placed At Lake Placid, N. Oimen Born in Norway. America’s outstanding skiier, Casper Oimen of the Sioux Valley Ski Club of Canton, S. Dak., has been in America only a few years, just about long enough to bc a naturalized citizen. He was naturalized last December, about a month prior to being selected as No. 1 man on the American team. He is a| mative of Norway. There is only one veteran on the team, the others being in their early twenties. Oimen, who after com- ing to America and graduating into the men’s class, three times won the Con- ciation championship and twice has held the national titie. In the la: two vears he scored 16 fi i events, including the -ti ment. Last year at Steal boat Springs, Colo., he tied the Ameri- can amateur record with a leap of 212 feet. A Wisconsin man is ranked No. 4 on the American team. He is Lemolne Batson of the Sioux Valley Club’ and a native of Eau Claire, Wis. He was a member of the 1924 Olympic team, and was the first American-born skiler to place in the national tourney last year. He holds records in tourneys at Wausau and Milwaukee, Wis. John D. Steel, representing the Rocky Mountain Winter Sports Association at Estes Park, Colo., is No. 5 on the Ameri- can team, and is the second American born. He was born in Minneapolis and is only 22 years old.
