New Top Levels Reached by Many Issues as Demand Increases. BY F. H. RiCHARDSON. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, January 14.—Bonds ad- vanced broadly to new high price levels on the movement in active trading to- day. The market opened strong in com- pany with an actively higher market for stocks. Wall Street awaited with interest today's decision of the New York Federal Reserve Bank directors, one group inclining toward the theory that the rediscount rate will be cut from 31, to 3 per cent in pursuance of the bank’s cheap money policy, and another believing that the rate will be main- tained at 31, per cent, because the cut in bill rates has ajready had the de- sired effect on the bond market. Another influence on bonds was the favorable prospects for the acceptance of a general wage reduction of 10 per cent by the railroad unions now meet- ing at Chicago with representatives of the companies. Those who view the benefit of a railway wage reduction as insufficient to take care of the carriers’ needs argue that the deferred mainten- ance charges for many roads will more than eat up the $250,000,000 that is xpected to be saved. One road, it is pointed out, which spent $2,800 a mile for maintenance in 1929, spent only $1.650 in 1931. Railroad issues were almost unani- mously higher. _Since some of them, notably Nickel Plate 6s and St. Louis Southwestern Consolidated 4s, have had gains of 14 to 18 points in two days, there was a moderate volume of profit taking. But this swerved the list from its upward course only for a moment. Advances of 2 to 5 points were common in such semi-speculative issues as Alle- ghany Corporation 5s, Baltimore & Ohio Convertible 4!.s, Chicago & Northwestern 4%s, Rock Island Re- funding 4s, Denver & Rio Grande Western 5s, Erie 5s, Illinois Central 43, International Great Northern Ad- justments, Missouri-Pacific 5s, Frisco 41,5 and Southern Pacific 41as. Bonds were sharply higher at the opening. The impulse given the market by the cutting of the Federal Reserve bill buying rate was aided by further re- ductions in bankers’ bill rates and the possibility that the rediscount rate would be cut today. Domestic railroad descriptions, such as Rock Island 4l%s, Alleghany Corporation 55, Denver & Rio Grande Western 5s, were up from 1 to 2 points. Industrials like National Dairy Products 5's and Brookiyn- Manhattan Transit 6s were also a point or more higher. United States Government bonds opened from 15 to 3 of a point higher, with most activity in Treasury 4%s and 3%s. Foreign dollar issues also were strong. _German governments were fractionally better. Municipals, such as Frankfort 815s, gained a.point. South American and Japanese bonds were firm. G. E. NEW YORK, January 14—Initial sales of new model 1932 automobiles, both at the New York Automobile Show this week and at dealers’ salesrooms throughout the country, have been so much larger than at any time since 1929 and so much greater than had been anticipated, that Detroit automobile company officials here for the show to- day foresaw the beginning of an up- ward trend in general business condi- tions. Predictions of increased sales by large automobile manufacturers were supported by a telegraphic survey com- pleted today by one of the largest motor car companies, as that company an- nounced that dispatches from its deal- ers in 45 key cities reported that show- room attendance and sales on the open- ing day had been far greater than for the past two years. In the first day’s showing dealers in the metropolitan New York zone re- ported 61,000 people in their show rooms and the sale of 125 cars. Metro- politan Boston had 50,000 visitors and sold 56 cars at retail; Washington, D. C., 4,000 people, with a sale of 14 cars, and 10 stores in Detroit had 48,000 people, with 41 orders taken and 28 actual de- liveries made to new customers. Cities reporting sales considerably in excess of a year ago, and in most in- stances of the past two years, are lo- cated in Michigan, North Dakota, Iowa, West Virginia, Alabama, Kansas, North Carolina, District of Columbia, Ohio, ‘Wisconsin, Massachusetts, Illinois, Flor- ida, Texas, California, Missouri, Colo= rado and Montana. This report covers 124 retail stores out of 978, where cars were on display and announced simultaneously with the New York show opening. Orders taken at these stores were reported as 559, with attendance totaling 190,000. A conservative estimate, based on these reports and supporting wires, indicates a total attendance of 950,000 people on opening day in the 978 sales rooms. A noteworthy feature of the sales re- ported to date are that practically all are for immediate delivery instead of for Spring dating, as has been the case for a large percentage in the past, DIVIDENDS DECLARED NEW YORK, January 14 (P).— Extra.
