THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, 15k (05 WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 6, 1932 RATEDECIONAD TOWESTERN LIS Substantial Benefits Forecast Following Supreme Court Ruling Against 1. C. C. By the Associated Press NEW YORK, January 6-—Western railroads will be substantially benefited by the United States Supreme Court de- cision against the Interstate Commerce Commission grain rate order, in the Mousic and Musicians Reviews and News of Capital's Programs. I was a delighted and enthusi- _ #stic ‘audience that filled the auditorium of Central Shawn and his dancers. It rose to the thrill of flowing movement in Mr. Shawn's first “Frohsinn” (Happy Spirit), sorrowed with the band of mourhing suppliant women who danced to @& somber Brahms “Inter mezzo,” applauded joy- ously when Bos- ton's dancing youth of 1854 went frisking ‘about did not move in exact harmony. In the “Music Visualizdfion” of the Brahms “E Flat Rhapsody.” how- ever, where each man moved singly, they served to augment the idea. The atmosphere on the whole stage seemed to be alive with vibrations of great power. and triumph. Mr. Shawn can work himself into a frenzy of intense, jerking motions in, for instance, a “Zuni Ghost Dance,” romp awkwardly (only with consummate skill) with the graceful Reginia, Beck and the statuesque Anna Austin in & merry and dra- matic “Bavarian Holiday,” or glide sinuously through patterns of Span- ish dances, snapping his fingers & role of the tragic Duchess whose love (as all loves in opera) proved too much for her. Mile. Leskaya was the pivotal fig- ure last night at the National Thea- ter in the second presentation of the Cosmopolitan Opera Ca., which was warmly received by the audlence and conducted with great sensitiveness by Jasques Samossoud. The latter, while he had considerable trouble in welding together the off-and-on- stage duet, succeeded admirably for the rest of the time in infusing the proper tempo into his orchestra, so that his singing stars were never, asis often the case, left high and dry. Particularly pleased must Mr. Sa- | mossoud have been With his young soprano—for Mlle. Leskaya not only sang her solo moments With & voice of golden clarity (after the initial | quavering), but she grew more mel- | low and lyrical with her tone as the | evening progressed, and more sure | of action, so that by the time she was dead and gone she had created what was surely an indelible char- | acter and a truly lovely creation of | voice and speech. The chorus, especially the male chorus, sang lustily and seemed una- fraid except at the beginning of the second act, when the fwo. gentlemen with hammers struck their anvils far too timidly. All in all, though, it was an interesting presentation, which gces to prove that this young opera company is growing fast in strength and stature, and should please its customers wherever it goes through the land. Mr. Brown is Executive Committee chairman of the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railway Co. and chairman of the board of the St. Louis-San Fran- cisco Railway, and both roads, he said, would be aided considerably.
