LEESBURG, Va., December 31.—The watch which was supposed to have been taken from Alfred Beavers' pocket llati Thursday morning when he was mur- | dered and his body thrown in an aban- doned well near Sterling was found yes terday in the bottom of the well. The belt loop of Beavers' pants was fastened to the rawhide string which the man | used as a watch guard. Sheriff E. F.| Adrian, who, in company with Com- | monwealth's Attorney John Galleher | and Deputy Sheriff B. B. Hutchinson, searched the well, said it looked as if the watch had been snatched from the man’s clothing and thrown in the well | after the body had been dropped into | the water [ Other articles found today in the well, which has 20 feet of water in it, were Beavers' pocketbook, with some small change in it, and his knife. The $27 which the man is said to have had with !him when he was murdered was not |found. Some gun wadding was found at the spot, 200 feet from the well, where the murder is supposed to have been committed. Further investigations into | the crime will be made. | “Aubrey Fox, 20-year-old farm hand, | friend of Beavers' wife, is held here in | | the Leesburg jail for further question- | |ing A former grilling threw no light on the crime. Mrs. Jessie Beavers, the | widow, is also being detained. She has | been questioned. : Beavers was shot Thursday morning of last week between 4 and 5 o'clock as | he went to his work on the dairy farm |of H. E. Dekay, 2 miles from his home. | ! The matters believed by the council to be of utmost importance to the county in preparation for the Bicentennial Celebration were explained by Arthur Orr, president, who declared that the Lridge approach was the most important of them all. Will Lose Opportunity. Claiming that the Arlington Memo- rial Bridge has been the dominant fac- to1 in the development County ever since the passage of the act providing for its construction, Orr declared that unless an approach is immediately built the county will lose during the coming year the greatest op- portunity in its history. Ninety per cent of the tourist travel will cross the new bridge, he said, and unless an casy connection with the county is provided it will all go down the Mount Vernon Memorial Highway and return the same way, without ever touching the county In short ‘addresses, members of the board declared that they are fully aware of the seriousness of the situation and have already given the matter consider- able thought. They are not ready as yet, however, to announce any decision, it was said. Other matters which Orr thinks need the co-operation of the county govern- ment are setting aside of an Arlington County Bicentennial week, during which celebrations and pageants would be held daily; planting and beautification, which would include a five-year program of street tree planting, plans for which are under preparation by a number of ex- perts on such work, and the adoption of an ordinance to bring about the cut- ting of weeds on vacant lots and the elimination of rubbish of all kinds. Urges Tolerance, Douglas called upon the council to| bring about a feeling of tolerance on | the part of the citizens with respect to the progress of the new board “Many pecple,” he said, “because of the great scope of the change, are ex- pecting great things of the board and believe that improvement in conditions will be immediate. They should re- member that the board faces a task of unusual magnitude and will require| much time to accomplish the needed imporvements.” Four of the members of the new board briefly addressed the meeting They were Harry A, Fellows, Lyman M Kelly, Fred A. Gosnell and John C. Gall.' Braden announced that he pre- ferred not to make a speech of any kind until he has been formally ap-| pointed. SUICIDE SEEN IN DEATH OF ARMY DOCTOR’S WIFE Mrs. N. H. Wiley Found Uncon- scious From Gas Yesterday in Home—First Aid Fails. The death by gas late Mrs. Norman H. Wiley, 25, wife of Capt. Wiley, Medical Corps, in her home at Fort Myer was declared by Maj. Alexander D. Surles, who made the coroner’s report, to have been suicide. Mrs.” Wiley was found unconscious on the floor of the kitchen by her hus- band when he returned from making his afternoon calls on patients. He called the Fire Department Rescue Squad, who worked over her for two and a half hours without results. Capt Wiley was absent from home from 1:30 o'clock until shortly after 4 o'clock. Capt. and Mrs. Wiley had been mar- ried about two years. They had been stationed at Walter Reed Hospital be- fore coming here. They have no chil- dren. May Aid Hoover Cause. There also is a belief among some that a Republican boit might serve to aid the Hoover cause in 1932 on the ground the third party would take away a block of the dissent vote which other- tion ticket. Others, however, vividly recall the disastrous Republican split of 1912 be- tween President Taft and Theodore Roosevelt and the resulting election of Woodrow Wilson. ‘The Hoover leaders are more imme- diately concesned in uniting their forces to assure his renomination | There is every sign that the President is going to encounter open opposition in the forthcoming primaries Senator Johnson of California is keep- ing all sides guessing on his intentions. It is realized that a race between Johnson and Hoover in their home State of California might have a real effect upon the next Republican con- vention. This primary is among the first to be held. Want “Progressive” Candidate. Regardless of a third party, the® ig no doubt that the Northwestern Repub- lican independents are ready to support what they term a “Progressive” candi- date against Hoover for the nomina- tion. In addition to Johnson, Senators Norris of Nebraska, Borah of Idaho and Gov. Pinchot of Pennsylvania, are among those the group would be glad to back. Norris himself has declined to go into the Republican convention race. He bolted Hoovor in the 1928 campaign, however, and around the veteran Ne- braska political insurgent is clustering the hopes of those talking about a third party. Deaths Reported. Eiiza 8.
