CAMPAIGN FUND SOLICITING PROBED {Grand Jury Sensation Prom- ised Against North Caro- lina G. 0. P. Officials. | By the Associated Press. | GREENSBORO, N. C., December 18. | —Grand jury investigation of charges | that Republican officials in North Caro- | lina have violated the Federal statutes | regarding solicitation of campaign funds | from officeholders got under way be- hind closed doors in Federal District Court here yesterday. The grand jury consumed the morn- { ing in considering minor cases and then | began calling the 57 witnesses sub- poenaed by E. L. Gavin, district attor- | ney. Court attaches said the jury would hardly be able to hear all of the wit- | nesses today. The jury was called at the request of Gavin, who last week seized records from the office of James S. Duncan, chairman of the Republican State Ex- ecutive Committee, and W. H. Foster, secretary. The party leaders petitioned the court for return of the papers, which was granted. Startling Evidence Promised. In defending his right to keep them Gavin told the court they contained evidence which would “tear the roof off this house.” In his argument before Judge John- son J. Hayes the district attorney said he had informatien that the party of- ficials were soliciting and “‘assessing Federal officeholders in Federal build- ings and reminding them that their jobs were created by the party, which was described in letters, the attorney said, as being particularly in need of | tunds to prosecute George M. Pritch- ard's contest for the Senate seat award- ed to Josiah William Bailey after the last election. District Attorney Silent. ‘The district attorney would not gom- ment, last night on the progress of the investigation, nor would he say whether he had presented a bill of indictment to the grand jury. “The matter is in the hands of the jury. I haven't even been in the room | today,” he said.
