NEW YORK, December 4—While there were still many weak spots in the bond market today, there were suffi- cient evidences of strength in both the foreign and domestic departments to demonstrate that there was a better undertone. Trading was in moderate volume. The opening was firm, and for a time virtually the entire list advanced nar- rowly, but when stocks hesitated the bond list turned irregular. Rails were helped by many reports that difficult situations had been cleared up by bank- ers. One factor contributing to this new optimism was the application of the New York Central to issue $100,- 000,000 of refunding 5s, due in 2013, for the purpose of using it as collateral against short-term notes. The road's bank debts are reported to be around $50,000,000. These, it is presumed, will be paid and the remainder of the new bonds used as security for short-term loans to provide working capital. New York Central 5s, outstanding bonds of the same mortgage under which the $100,000,000 will be issued if approved by the Interstate Commerce Commission, opened up 7 points from ‘Wednesday's low. The road announced that none of the new bonds will be offered to the public. This served to check fears that other Central issues might be depressed in competition with the new bonds. New York Central 6 per cent bonds, due in 1935, were off 3 points to a new low, however. Appointment of a receiver for the Ann Arbor Railroad caused a sharp drop in the road's first 4s. These have for some time sold at prices reflecting .13 104 24 ADitibl P&P 6s°53. Ab&St5% "43.... Adams Exp 4543 Alleghany Cp 65 44 Allegheny 5s°49. Sloan, jr., president of General Motors Corporation, believes the country is building the foundation for a still greater and more stable prosperity. In a statement to stockholders, which accompanied the company's pamphlet report of third quarter earnings, Mr. Sloan states that the automobile indus- try is in the strongest position in its history. The statement of earhings shcwed no change in the preliminary figures previously published. For the third quarter net earnings of $13,333,214 were shown, after deduction of preferred dividends. A balance of $10,989,062 was earned on the common stock, equivalent to 25 cents a share, compared with $23,108,728, or 53 cents a share, for the same period of last year. Quick Assets. The company’s cash, United States Government and other marketable se- curities on September 30 amounted to $264,107,166, compared with $179,037.- 171 December 31, 1930, and $202,064.960 September 30, 1930. Company’s total sales to dealers during the third quarter amounted to - 215,649 cars, against 244,378 for the same quarter of 1930. In his comment Mr. Sloan said: “Notwithstanaing the very subnormal rate of operations at which the auto motive industry, in common with all other industries, is operating, I might at this time reaffirm the statement that I have made before to the effect that the motor car is today in the strongest position in its history from the stand- point of having become an economic necessity.” As to the destructive and construc- tive features of the present period of subnormal business, he adds: “From the standpoint of the latter, it anticipation of a receivership. While compari- sons of 1931 with last year, both in pro- *duction and sales, show a marked fall- “ing off for the current year in most auonths as well as for the probable total vfor the year, motor car executives find Httle reason for discouragement at the general showing of the industry. They point out that while production for 1931 Pprobably will be somewhere around the 2,200,000 mark, the important thing is that substantially all the cars produced “‘were sold and that excepting for neces- sary dealers’ floor stocks there ;will be no carry over into next year of surplus ‘output.
