Folks Behind The Microphone BY THE RADIO EDITOR. ILEEN CLARK, a typically mod- ern girl of the Middle West, is one of radio's newest stars. She rose to enjoy popular radio acclaim over night, after study- | ing for years on slender resources end | without family encouragement. Miss Clark is probabiy the cnly girl in radio who won a highly remunera- tive commercial contract within 24 hours after she took her original .nd only radio audition. Many of the radio stars of today have served months and even years of apprenticeship in the studios before obtaining & sponsor. On August 26 she obtained her mo- mentous audition. On August 27 she signed a contract to appear exclusively on the Paint Club program, broadcast | each Saturday night from 9:30 to 10 | p.m. over an N. B. C. network. Miss Clark is 24 years old. She was born ‘n St. Louls, of parents without | any marked artistic talents. At an early age, however, she recognized the merits of her own voice and soon be- came engrossed in vocal study. That vocal study, plus the reading of grand operas, has occupied most of her days and nights since. | o HE Sisters of the Skillet, those ex- ponents of impossible household hints, are beginning to wonder whether something is wrong with their singing diction. They an- swer some on the air. | But they are rather puzzled now as how to reply to one which asked why, | as their signature, they sing “Keep on a 8mall Island.” The boys insist it sounds to them like “Keep on a Sm- ling.” (TR I *xox o CHRISTMAS SEAL broadcast -p-\ peal will be made over an N.B.C. | network tomorrow night by a | i group of popular radio artists, including | Eddie Canter, Jessica Dragonette and Bill Hay...The Three Doctors will he moved from an afternoon spot on N.
