Fear is more terrible thén pain. A study of the causes of suicide in Great Britain, reported to the British Medical Association by Dr. H. Crichtan- Miller, shows that persons seldom re- sort to death to escape from actual physical suffering, but that they kill themselves because of anticipated pain which they never have experienced. Civilized man, it was concluded, is more capable of adjusting the actuality than- dread. Fear of insanity, it was reported, seems a more potent cause of suicide than actual insanity. Cases were cited where the suicide drive completely dis- appeared when the patient became suf- ficiently disoriented to be diagnosed as insane. Figures from the last four British censuses show that three times as many men as women kill themselves. T.R. H. (Copyright, 1931.)
