THE EVENING From the Front Row Reviews and News of Washington's Theaters. Belasco Premier of “The Naughty Duchess.” UGUSTUS X, King of Poldavia—alias “T00-100"— danced in his gold pyjamas before a mirror in Washing- ton’s Paradise Hotel, his lady friend, the duchess, on, and, unfortunately at that moment & United States | Senator and his clergyman friend = walking along the bal- cony outside caught the friv- olous King in the first paces of what turned out to be a sec- ond-rate “Black | Bottom.” There- | n upon, said ator and clergy burst into thunder clouds of indignation and demanded that this visit- ing King and his handsome duchess, who had come to America in search of gold and bond issues, be evicted from their hotel. “This is the initial gist of the wee, small satire, labeled “The Improper Duchess,” which came to the Belasco last night under the patronage of the Professional Players, and which it is said is still keeping Londoners up late laughing. Which it is known that Londapers are prone to laugh at many things which come their way, it seems very, very curious that they should have been able to find even mild hysteria over such a heavy-handed satire as Mr. Fagan has in this case contrived. After an impossible first act in which oil and bonds and American big business and visiting royalty are aired out at supernatural lengths, there is a pleasant sort of humor in- Jected by Walter Connolly, who, as in all things he plays, is so natural and believable as the outraged Senator who eventually bows before the charms of the talented duchess that the play immediately jumps to the level of near-amusement. The sight of Mr. Connolly, caught later than midnight in the duchess’ parlor- Irene Bordonl, bed room, sneezing behind a heavy suit of armor. is one of the few treats of the evening, as is the picture of the same gentleman at the end of the play standing before the curtain open mouthed, with a gauntlet w! his lady has given him as & remem-~ brance in his wonder-stricken hand. of the matter is (if y want to know) that by the process of sugared smiles and caviar and champagne the duchess escapes eviction from the hotel. Not only that, she takes back her K to Poldavia full of honor and gol bonds. 1t seems that a gentle- man as astute in theater lore as is Mr. Fagan should have contrived & comedy in which there is such scant excitement. The end of the first act is by no means provocative of in the next, and the end of the sec- ond has little to suggest that there will be & climax in the third. Al- * though staged with great taste and costumed ‘“elegantly,” it does seem as though the theatric coffers might have provided some sort of liquid to prevent the actors from drinking (thampagne) ozone. Irene Bordoni, for whom this play was imported, has neither a part so large nor a part so vivaclous as is her habit. Opportunities for roliing her large, handsome eyes come but spasmodically, and while she does very nicely, there is really nothing much for her to do. Besides, she al- lows Mr. Connolly to “take” the final curtain, thus shattering a tra- dition and implying perhaps that ilu role is fatter than her own—and it is. ' The only other members of the cast who emerge with any sort of distinction are Florence Edney as the garrulous maid and Thomas !';Alndhy. who "silfl{u his satirical churchman with elegant gusto.
