The Navy today is turning from sea- planes to landplanesi for all except patrol purposes. The Navy fighters, light bombers and torpedo planes now are landplanes, cesigned for operation from carrier decks. All these planes are standard military dels of known spseds. In order to past Curtiss races, pilots have im- proved the performance by ’pu ting on temporary streamlining devices, “pep- ping up” the motors and using other devices to gain a mile or two additional speed. ‘The Navy's determination to with- draw from the Curtiss race this year not only is the result of an effort to save money, but also becguse ranking naval aviation officials are convinced that the Navy has no business engeging in such competitions with standard fighting planes. It was pointed out here today that the Thompson race for land planes, created last year as the climax of the Naticnal Afr Races, has in the first two years of competition resulted in an in- creased speed of participating planes of 35 miles per hour. Similar improve- ment in speed of seaplancs may be ex- pected if the Curtiss race is opened to all comers, with sufficlent prize money 1o spur designers and butlders, naval cfficials believe.
