By the Associated Press. For overstepping the bounds of Navy discipline on this Summer's training crulse to European ports, several mid- shipmen today faced dismissal from the Naval Academy. From four to ten men were said by Navy Department officials to be in- volved. All were members of the first or third classes and were among the 984 midshipmen who returned on Au- gust 13 from a trip of more than two Tonths aboard the battleships Arkansas and Wyoming. Details Withheld. ‘Whether the_ infractions of rules occurred ashore or aboard ship was.not divulged. “making no statement on midshipmen in trouble” was reiterated and all de- talls were withheld. , It was learned, however, a preliminary report had been made to the Bureau nf Navigation, which handls personnel, by Rear Admiral Thomas C. Hart, academy superintendent. This followed a report to the superintendent by Rear Admiral Claude C. Bloch, commander of the cruise. Get Chance to Defend Selves. Capt. Ralph E. Pope, acting chief of the Bureau of Navigation, said the nor- mal procedure would be for the in- dividuals involved to make a statement in their own defcnse. Unless they can establish their inno- cence, dismissal probablv will follow. Capt. Pope pointed out that only about “‘one-tenth of 1 per cent” of the men on the cruise were involved and recalled that “one or two" were dismissed after last_year's trip. “On every cruise there are usually six or eight men who get into trouble,” he observed.
