FOREST FIRES VEER AWAY FROM HOMES Residents Are Recruited to Halt Flames Periling Towns in Northwest. By the Assoctated Press. SPOKANRE, August 19.—Residents of hglf a dozen northwest towns breathed easier today es forest fires veered away from homes to ccnfine their destruction tozpine stands and brush, Armies of residents and quickly re- crpited Federal, State and’ protective association fighters, aided by favorable winds, checked blezes roaring at the gates of Troy, Boville, Forest and Juli- etts, in Idaho, and Liberty Lake and Diamond Lake, in Washington. An unknown number of farm build- ings were destroyed, but only one resi- dence in a town. Shift of Wind Feared. Reports of human casualties coming out of the ccnfusion on the Boville and Troy fronts proved unfounded. Al the towns were not in im- mediate danger, the situation was still critical, as a shifting wind would send the flames back into the towns. Al imately 10,000 tl.nen were fight- | ing the fires in three States. Two Dead in Fires to Date. An estimate of 50 ranches already de- | D5 stroyed came from foresters and news- paper men. More than 1,000 sheep and cattle have been killed.
