LTHOUGH divided ambition may not be adyisable for most it_worked out well for Thomas Breen, jr., a Co- lumbia announcer. As a school- boy in Minneapolis, where he was born in 1905, Tom ,wanted to be a ship's wireless operator. Later, an urge for the stage settled upon him. He took part in school plays, and the assort- ment of wires, transformers and other electrical equipment in his room was replaced by photos and newspaper cut- outs of matinee idols. By the time Tom entered the Uni- versity of Minnesota, however, he was torn between the two careers. He com- promised on a course in radio engineer- ing, and took part in all extra-cur- ricular activities allied with the stag: By that time wireless had definitel been replaced by radio, and Tom cut short his college days to take a job as an engineer on construction work of Station KSTP, in St. Paul. That he eventually blossomed into a radio announcer was the outcome, and in 1929 he joined the staff of a Chicago network station. He was assigned to some of the sta- tion's biggest ‘programs, including broadcasts of the Chicago Civic Opera Co. On that job he got his baptism of fire. During a program some one failed to deliver some notes that Breen WAs to use, and with absolutely nothing to 0 by but his own knowledge and train- ng in drama and music, he ad libbed for 52 minutes. * K K K E Hambletonian Stakes for a purse of $60,000 will be broadcast tomor- row, when the world's richest trot- ting classic will be run at the Goshen mile tract at Goshen, N.
