ALFONSO'S DENIAL | he beileved that former King Alfonso and the Carlist pretender, Don Jaime, had arranged to abdicate the crown rights in favor of Don Juan, Alfonso's His statement followed upon an ar- ticle in the newspaper Heraldo stating that former Monarchists, under the Duke of Alba and former Foreign Min- ister Gonzalez Hontoria, had formed a Juanista party, and already were taking contributions. Foreign Minister roux said he knew nothing of this. Heraldo attributed to Lerroux a,state- ment that the reported abdication would not be made public until a new Spanish constitution was enacted. The news- paper sald that Lord Londonderry's re- cent denial of & newspaper report that Alfonso had: abdicated thus was cor- rect, but only partly told the story. Former King Alfonso, in London, last Tuesday denied a published story pur porting to give an account of his re nunciation of the Spanish crown in favor of Don Juan, with the words: credit him in the eyes of the Spanish people. SHADOW PLAY TO END SCHOOL AT CATHOLIC U. Children in Demonstration Classes of Art Department Will Give Novel Presentation. The presentation of a nativity shadow play by children in the dem- onstration classes of the art depart- ment this afternoon and evening at McMahon Auditorium will mark the final week of the twenty-first Summer School season at Catholic University. Performances will be given at 3:30 and 7:15 o'clock. notice—is a man Warner Baxter, his throat, salts it with water, makes a gient fire' by blowing into a e r fire basket, and then puts the thing out by calling back that ffty-ninth glass of water. It's all very good fun. And as long as Mr. Al doesn't mind,. it's probably a very nice habit to get into and very con- venient after that first soup course dinner topic has been exhausted. Other than Mr. Ali the stage show is full of milder magic—a don- key, several goats, some eccentric idea. Although no one mentioned it particularly, the stage setting is very fine, and should be viewed with a pleasant gulp of wonderment as the curtain rises. The film is something called “Their Mad Moment.” Just when this “moment” is meant to be it would be hard to say. Most all of it seems fairly mad. Strangely enough, when, at yesterday's first show, the loudspeaker suddenly went dumb, the dialogue seemed better than before. Dorothy Mackaill, heretofore al- ational banner, lied with the First under Fox management, goes com- pletely under. Evidently told by Di- rector MacFadden to look pretty throughout, she registers complete vacancy from first to last, and seems as annoyed with the dialogue as was most of the audlence. From the Front Row news reels that has ever burst into . MELCHER. filmlight. E. de 8. “The Common Law’ Continues at R-K-O Kelth's. ond week at Keith’s. Some have en- joyed it, some frankly say they have not. Some think Miss Bennett a dummy handsomely bedecked in fashionable clothes, some think Mr. McCrea a lad with a foot ball hero’s build, who speaks his lines as he might on the foot ball field. To all this we object. Mr. Mc- Crea cannot help his build, and Miss Bennett cannot help her clothes— Both are obvious assets to a cer- © tain niche in the entertainment world. The story of “The Common Law” s admittedly uncertain and not by any means convincing. Yet, it is treated so light-heartedly by the players, and so unobtrusively by the director, that many of its shady sides may be forgiven. To say that just because Mr. McCrea hasn't a be the artists’ “type,” and just be- cause Miss Bennett doesn't throw herself around a la Swanson, the picture is to be ignored seems a ver dict neither too reasonable nor too sound. Although, as some one has de- clared, in order to have a problem play there must be a problem, and although the problem in this—free- dom versus marriage—is not bitten into with any particular ferocity, it does seem as though there is suffi- clent in it to make one forget the city’s torrid pavements and the tribulations of hot Summer days. Miss Bennett, without throwing fits of melodramatic hysteria, shows that she can be quite satisfving in a milder vein. No tears this time to speak of, no babes thrown out the windcw, no little feet pattering around the Christmas tree, and, C. OF C. MAY BACK Ay the United States yesterday urged di- rectors of the chamber to go on record In favor of putting Japan and China on POLICE HERO RAISED that “present conditions make this a mos} opportune time for serious con- sideration of this subject on the part of all our citizens. The question is a prac- tical one, covering the relations between great nations that should be on the friendliest terms. The number of im- migrants would be so small as to be negligible. The quota for Japan would be approximately 185 a year and for China 105 a year.” Briggs also pointed out that the last annual report of the Secretary of Labor emphasized the feasibility of a quota basis, having sald that it would afford In some instances “even more complete control” of this immigration than now is possible.
