SRINIGAR, Kashmir, India, July 14—The killing of nine Moslems and the wounding of scores or more by olice in the line of duty was viewed today as a setback to the settlement of communal relations between Mos- lems and Hindus. A mob of Mohammedans stormed the jail yesterday in an attempt to rescue one of thelr number accused of delivering an inflammatory address against the Hindus. Armed with make- £hift weapons, they invaded the build- ing and overpowered the guard The Maharajah of Kashmir took charge of the situation and mobilized troops on the scene. Police reserves fired on the invaders and shot them down when they refused to retreat. Nine were killed on the spot and many received wounds from which it was feared they might die Terror spread through the city and the more peaceful Moslems barricaded themselves within their homes in fear | of a general Hindu attack. The more | revengeful carried the battle to the Hindu section, assaulting pedestrians, burning homes and wrecking shops. Kashmir ordinarily is a peaceful state, peopled largely by Moslems. and no similar outbreak has cccurred for nearly a century. Recently, however, the Moslems have become embittered in the belief that the choicest govern- ment posts were going to the Hindus. TWO DIE IN SIMLA RIOT. SIMLA, India, July 14 (P).—Twol| persons were killed and one was injured ! today when police fired on a crowd | which was attacking revenue officials | and seizing property at Mustafabad. | An official was felled with a mallet and the police were attacked when they ‘went to his rescue. MOB MEMBER TELLS OF MANILA STONING Attack on U. S. Clubmen Termed Sequel to Harmless Interest of Natives in Bathers. By the Associated Press. MANILA, July 14 —The Manila Bul- letin yesterday published a letter from @ reputed member of a mob which stoned Americans gathered about an outdoor swimming pool Sunday, saying the PFilipinos meant no harm and were attracted by the “white, pretty legs of the bathers.” Stone-throwing, in which several Americans were alightly injured, began after the Filipinos were ordered to leave the grounds of the Army and Navy Club. “We boys, numbering about 200, gathered in that place because we were interested with the white, pretty legs of the bathers,” the purported letter sald. Despite this explanation, some Amer- {cans blamed the trouble on revival of Philippine independence agitation and a parade of 50,000 Filipinos held Sun- day. The demonstration was reviewed by United States Senators Hawes, Mis- souri, and Pittman, Nevada. It admit- tedly was held in an attempt further to convince the Senators of the desire of the islands for complete independence. Both Senators addressed the throng. saying they just had witnessed most convincing proof of the desire of the citizenry. Jury Debates Killing. FREEHOLD, N. J, July 14 (#)—The ry which for five days has listened to stimony at the trial of Louis Parker, 33, of Highlands, charged with killing Raymond Waddle, 30, son of the assist- ant chief of police of Bowling Green, Ky., began its deliberation today. Charles Hichborn, who ought to know better, because he has tried the same thing before, brought his 6,000-ton 8. 8. Caracas of the Red D Line into New York Harbor this week from the Carib- tain roosters and eighteen ring-tailed monkeys on board. The consequences were even better than migh® have been expected—a mix- ture of “Alice in Wonderland," “Aesop’s Fables” and a zoological nightmare. Somewhere between Quarantine and dock in Brooklyn t ring-tailed monkeys, with the conni ance of the carpenter bird and the vo- ciferous approval of the mountain roosters, fled the confines of their cage and undertook to man the ship. The carpenter bird, which is endowed with & beak combining all the virtues of a pneumatic drill and an augur, blasted a hole in the monkeys' cage and the monkeys reached through this hole with a button hook to unlatch the door. The bird then flew to a grandstand seat on the mainmast and observed proceedings, which consisted of the ef- forts of the Caracas’ harried crew first to make sure that they were sober and that 18 ring-tailed monkeys actually were loose on the ship and then to capture the monkeys and return them to their cage. One Monkey is reported to have found its way to the cabin of a lady passenger, who was dallying with her breakfast in her bunk. The monkey sampled the breakfast, but finding it not to his liking, donned the lady's boudoir cap at a rakish angle and de- parted in search of further adventure The problem of the bird itself was speedily solved by an appeal to its vanity. Jose Coviedo, the dealer who brougit the zoo and aviary to New York, drummed feebly with his fingers on a brighly colored tin can. The car- penter bird observed these efforts with contempt. Then Mr. Coviedo withdrew to a | point of vantage. leaving the tin can in view. Promptly the carpenter bird swooped down from its perch on the mainmast to show how such things should be done. Detroit collided with the trawler Joseph SEATTLE'S MAYOR OUSTED BY RECALL Election Votes Out Edwards After He Dismisses Man Heading Light Utility. By the Associated Press. SEATTLE, July 14.—Seattle’s “busi- ness man mayor,” Frank Edwards, was voted out of office by a decisive’ major- ity in a recall election here yesterday. Appearing as a “dark horse” in 1928, Edwards was chosen to succeed Mrs. Bertha K. Landes. The recall election | grew out of incompetency charges made | against the mayor after he had dis-| missed J. D. Ross as head of the City Light Department. The unofficial returns showed 35,637 | for the recall and 21,836 against. The question was simply one of recalling the mayor, no candidates having been in- volved. Under the law, the City Coun- cil must choose a successor to Edwards within 20 days. With President Robert Harlin of the City Council in charge of the city's af- fairs pending selection of Edwards’ suc- cessor by the Council, the reinstatement of Ross and reorganization of the Board of Public Works were expected in the | near future. | Ross, who since his dismissal in March has served as a consultant for | New York State in the projected St. WASHINGTON, D.
